Descendents of Mark Hardin Shumate

Not many researcher believe that the Shumate line is connects or at least have connected the Shumate's from Claiborne County to the Daniel de la Chaumette born about 1628 in Rochechouart, Limousin, France. Although there were other was another Mark Harden/Hardin Shumate the Mark that married Deborah Demarques has not been directly connected to this main line of Shumates.

This family becomes very complicated when researching as there were two Mark Hardin/Harden Shumate's. The one that came to Claiborne County was the son of the following Daniel taken from the website SHUMATE FAMILY IN STAFFORD, PRINCE WILLIAM AND FAUQUIER COUNTY, VIRGINIA:

Daniel SHUMATE II was born about 1730 in Stafford County, Virginia. We have not identified the first wife of Daniel SHUMATE. Daniel married Sarah Ann Daniel SHUMATE as his second wife. Daniel died about Feb 1806 in Fauquier County, Virginia.
Some have suggested that the surname of his wives may have been JAMES or SUDDOTH. Does any one have information on his first wife?

It is evident that Daniel married SARAH ANN CORNWELL, widow of PETER CORNWELL, sometimes after the death of her former husband (about 1776) and before the May Court of 1778 of Fauquier County. Peter Cornwell's will, dated 2 June 1776, mentioned his "beloved wife, SARAH ANN", and his children: daughter Mary; son Daniel; son Jacob; son Simon; son Jarvice. He appointed his wife, SARAH ANN, Executrix and his son SIMON and Mr. William HUNTON, Executors. This will was probated 26 August 1776. (Fauquier County WB I, p. 293-295.
When Court was held on 26 May 1778 in Fauquier County, it was ordered that SARAH ANN SHUMATE, late widow of Peter Cornwell, deceased, receive her dower in the land and slaves, and also a child's part of the personal estate left by PETER CORNWELL. JOHN CORNWELL and SIMON CORNWELL, sons of Peter, objected by Andrew Buchanan their attorney. But the court overruled the objection. (Fauquier County Minute Book (1773-1780), p. 321)
The next year, on 24 May 1779 in Fauquier County Court, we find this entry: "John CORNWELL, Daniel SHUMATE and Simon CORNWELL came into Court and (produced bond) in the sums following...John CORNWELL 500 pounds, Daniel SHUMATE and Simon CORNWELL two hundred and fifty pounds each...to be void on condition the said John CORNWELL be of good behaviour towards all citizens of the said Commonwealth for twelve months." (Fauquier County Minute Book *1773-1780, p. 380).
Sarah Ann was second wife of Daniel Shumate. I do not believe she was SARAH ANN JAMES as von Stuaffenberg and Mr. Riley say. Of course alot of what Riley says, he took from von Stauffenberg's genealogy of the Shumate family and then added his own. Molly SHUMATE molly@sunline.net

In the name of God, Amen. I, Daniel Shumate of Fauquier County of Leeds Parish being weak of body but of sound and disposing mind and memory, do make and ordain this my last will and testament in Manner and form following, that is to say, first I commend my Soul to God its creator in all humble hope of its future happiness through the only merits of my blessed Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and my body to the ground to be decently buried at the discretion (SIC) of my executors hereafter named and as to worldly estate which God has been pleased to bless one with.
I give and bequeath as followeth.
Imprimis. I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Sarah Ann Shumate one feather bed and furniture, one Negro fellow name Jo and all the corn and provisions now in my possion (sic) for the support of the plantation this year to her and her heirs forever. It is also my Will and desire that the negro fellow belonging to John PARIS and the negro wench belong to my son William after my death shall remain on the plantation this year as my sons Mark and William promised me if I rented a plantation and began a crop they should do so.
Item. The rest of my estate after the rent and my just debts are paid and one third part given to my wife are to be equally divided between my daughters Judah PARIS, DUANNA JOHNSTON, Dinah LUTTRELL and my son Samuel SHUMATE but in case John PARIS takes his negro away his wife is to have not part of it and to be divided between the other three.
Lastly, I nominate and Appoint my son William SHUMATE and John Parish executors of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all others by me here to fore made.

Signed, Sealed and Acknowledged his to be the last will of the Testator Daniel X SHUMATE in presence of us 29 Jan 1806 mark X Joseph BLACKWELL sealed John (his mark) Winn Jemima (her mark) Winn (Sister of Daniel II) At a Court held for Fauquier County the 24th day of February 1806.

FIRST GENERATION

(1) Mark1 SHUMATE was born in 1758 in Faquier Co., Va, and in 1784 in Prince William Co., Va married (2) Deborah DEMARQUES who was born about 1760 in Va.   Mark died in 1838 at Claiborne Co., Tn.

According to the Summer edition 1996 of Reflections, Polly Shumate Drucke, 43844 Mandarin Dr., Hemet, CA 92544-8553 says.


Seeking information on descendants, Salathiel Martin (wife Mary Cook_ came for NC about 1800. Mark Shumate (wife Deborah Demarques) came from Va 1806. Salathiels' dau., Nancy M. Marks son, John Shumate, John's son, also John, m. Berilla Billingsley, dau. of William P. Billingsley and Margaret McCrary. Salabhiel was a soldier in the Revolutionary War who fought at the Battle of Cow Pens, and Guiford Court House, NC.
