Locating Lillie (Shanks?) Cruthchfield.  The wife of Dock Cruthchfield  - James R. Crutchfield – Washington, D.C.

Thanks for the picture and census sheet.

Regarding the gas station, according to the back of the card it was located between Powell and Clinch River.  I believe Paul still owned it in 1974 as I stopped by that station to say hello to him and several other relatives and I though he was still running it.  I know that a gas station was still at that site when I drove through to show a friend on the way back from Nashville about 12 years ago.  I know there is a big lower level highway that goes by there now.  When you face it there used to be a road about a block up that took you up a hill past what I think was a feed warehouse to their house.  I noticed the road was closed during my quick visit. The station seemed to have served as a community meeting place so our Aunt would often take us down to spend the evening.  Paul and Judy did not have any children.  I know Paul married his old high school sweetheart who had moved back to town some time later but no idea what her name is.

I do remember that there used to be a roller skating rink which I think was somewhat up the other direction from the station.  Still have the song "White Silver Sand" in my head after all these years as it was played so much.  Another one they played was "Love Letters In The Sand".

Feel free to use the picture however you want. I thought it might be useful.  Not sure when it switch from Humble to ESSO.

Getting back to family.  I did discovered that after my grandmother Lillie died, her daughter was given to an aunt with the married name of Noe to raise and Ruth went by that name until she married.  Not sure if she was a sister of Lillie or Dock.  Other than finding the parents’ names of Lillie's family I am drawing a blank on linking her parents with any other Shanks. Spent five hours on line learning a lot about Shanks but not any link so far.

I may contact the funeral homes there to see if they can tell me where my father is buried and while it is not likely if they kept records who signed in the day of the service.

Regards

James

James,

Here is the picture I have of a distant wife of what I think would be a great uncle of yours.

Laura Alice Johns Crutchfield was the wife of Levi Crutchfield.  I am sending along the 1900 census that has the family of Amos (sp. Amous) Crutchfield.

This is our distant relationship, my father always talked about being related to Pat, Paul and James P. Crutchfield, a local optometrist who was instrumental in our early football team, but I never knew how until I found this.

Amos Crutchfield was born March 25, 1845.  His wife was Eliza England.  Amos’s father was James Crutchfield born 1824 and his mother was Jane Wilson.  Amos had brother’s Thomas, born 1846 and John born 1848.  This from the 1850 census below.

I have attached a colored copy of the postcard of Paul's Crutchfield's Esso Station.  If you towards the middle of the white top of the blue car you will see my Uncle Paul's stand and talking to a women who is sitting down.  Not sure but it looks like his wife, Judy Crutchfield.

From what I can determine Dock is the son of Amos Crutchfield (born 1845?.  I believe his wife was Eliza England

Amos appears to be the son of James A (Dock) Crutchfield (Born 1824) and Jane Wilson Crutchfield.  James was listed in the 1950 census as a laborer and I have found some indication he was a Rev.  I am wondering is that could be where some of the Crutchfield’s became Methodist.  There is a belief he died in the Civil War as he did not appear in the 1870 Census.  I have seen there was a Rev James A Crutchfield out somewhere like MO.  So trying to determine the birth date of that Crutchfield to see if there is confusion between the two but apparently there have been a number of Crutchfield’s in the ministry.

I would enjoy seeing the picture and if you like I have several of Dock including one taken about 1920.  Probably in Phillipe, WV where a store for several years.  It may have been a coal mind store.  Ruby Gibson who was raised by my step grandmother (Julie Argle (SP) Crutchfield Shapr/sharpe) indicated he owned the Bottle Cap Gas Station at one point and I have been wondering if it is the one in the 100 hundred of New Tazewell.

James,

Well, I did a little research and our family does connect although not directly.  Dock Crutchfield, if I am correct, was

the son of Amos or Amous.  He had a brother Levi that was two years older.  Levi P. Crutchfield married Laura Johns

who was a sister to my great grandmother Martha Alice Slatton Johns, who married George Livesay.

I have a picture of Laura Johns Crutchfield and my grandmother Mattie Livesay.

If these sounds correct to you I will be glad to send it along.

Thanks,

Joe

Subject: Old picture of Crutchfield Service Station New Tazewell ca 1935

James and Jake,

Hope this email finds it's way to you both. A cousin of mine, Bill Chumley just emailed or posted on Facebook a picture I know you both will be interested in.

It is of Dock Crutchfield's Service Station somewhere around 1935 or so. He said it sat more towards Knoxville than Paul Crutchfield's station was.

I am sure it was the Bus Stop and all around place to meet. It was later called the Bottle Cap after Doc or Paul or one of the Crutchfield's sold it. Covered with bottle caps. It still stands in New Tazewell.

Hope this finds you both well, let me know if you get this.

Possible Lillie Crutchfield Family

According to Rootsweb Simon Shanks above and in picture has nothing to do with the Crutchfield family that James is referring to. I found the following on Rootsweb:

Simon Shanks m. Maryanna Minerva Weimer.

His daughter Lillian m. Irvin Earl Sheeler

An Ancestry.com family tree has Lillie Shanks as being the daughter of Joseph Keyser Shenk "Shanks"
Birth 10 Dec 1846 in Page, Virginia, USA
Death Aft 1910 in Wise, Virginia, USA

Has that Joseph married twice – first to Elizabeth A. Traister in 1868 and then after her death in 1884 to Margaret “Maggie” Wright in 1890 and that Lillie was the first child of this marriage born 1883.  Her death certificate below has no information regarding her parents and the date of her birth is 7 years before the marriage and before the death of his first wife.  Also a conflict is the 1900 census showing that Joseph’s daughter Lillie was born in 1890 and wife Maggie being born 1872 which means she would have only been 11 if Lillie was born 1883 as stated on her death record.

The only think I can tell you about Lillie is that I believe her maiden name was Shanks .  I am sending you what may be her family but I have only found the additional information in the past day and am not sure if this is the right person but feeling pretty comfortable as it fits the year of birth that I previously had.  But I have quickly found how easy it is to be misdirected by jumping to conclusions.  It would be nice as it would be the only picture of her I am aware of.  At least I have some of my grandfather Dock Crutchfield.  If this helps you confirm anything about Lillie please let me know.

The issue on the various churches was one of the things holding me off as to whether she was the right Lillie as not being having information on the church I was not sure it was the right church.  Having lived in New Tazewell in 1957/58 with my Uncle Paul Crutchfield and His wife Judy I was aware that it was not too likely that the early churches were likely to have been segregated.

I have been trying to track down the daughters of my Uncle William (Bill) Crutchfield but even with married names it is a challenge.  I only saw him and his wife Stella once in 1955 when my father died and since he would be 102 and his wife close to that it is unlikely they are still alive.

When I get to a point that I feel pretty sure of my family line I will send you a breakdown if you like.  I think I have it back to 1824 but doing various double checks.

One of the things I have not figured as to how the Crutchfield's got to Tazewell.  I suspect from Virginia as I found the city is names after a Virginia Senator.  But that is just a guess for now.  But I have been learning guesses is where it starts from.  : )

Now I should get to bed.  I need to not start this search at 1 or 2 in the morning as I can't stop when I start finding something new.  Lucky I am retired and usually up until 4 anyway.  It is so peaceful and that helps make it go faster.

Regards

James R. Crutchfield

Mr. Crutchfield,

How nice to hear from you and I do wish I could find more on your grandmother Lillie Crutchfield.  I recently was part of my small Methodist church, Tazewell United Methodist Church's 100 year celebration.

I found among my parents books a diary that my Aunt was given from the Methodist Episcopal Church in the 1920's.  She evidently attended the Methodist Episcopal while my grandmother attended another the church I now attended.  Both my mother and aunt passed away and I found this after they died.  I never really understood the relationship between the two churches but have found reference to both.  There was a large population of African Americans during the latter part of the 19th and early part of the 20th century in Tazewell and I think it has something to do with that but I just can't say for sure.

I am related to a Crutchfield family through my great grandmother Johns.  I have the genealogy of that relationship on another computer and if interested can try and look that up for you.

I lived in D.C. for about 4 years back in the 1970's and worked there in 1983.  My wife grew up in Bethesda, the daughter of a Channel 4 news anchor, Glen Rinker.  We had hoped that we might someday return but that will probably not happen.  Although close myself to retirement age I probably will stay in the workforce for another 10 years or so.

Happy to hear from you and if you would like to exchange some genealogy just let me know.

Take care,

Joe,

I just wanted to thank for your posting regarding the Methodist Episcopal Church in Tazewell, Tn.  I hope you have been able to identify the church in the picture as I am becoming very aware how hard it is to find out about things that far in the past.   In the listing of members I found the only reference to what my grandmother Lillie Crutchfield may have done beyond being a mother.  She died in 1918 and my father in 1955 when I was then so I never had a chance to hear anything about her.  Even this little tidbit is nice.  Even more so as I worked part time now that I am retired at a nearby Methodist Church.

Dock and Lillie’s children:

 William Howard Crutchfield 1909 – 1983

 Paul Edward Crutchfield 1912 – 1974

Edward Willard Crutchfield 1915 – 1986 - This is incorrect as stated in the email from James R. Crutchfield below:

Joe,
I will take some time to look over the information this week.
Thanks for this. I have not been able to find more on Lilly and that death certificate does that I have been chasing the wrong ghost regarding the name Shanks and need to start fresh. (Scream) I found the reference to Shanks over 10 years ago when I was just tampering around and need to see if I have anything to explain where I got the name and why I felt it was such a high possibility that I did not include a question mark.
Regarding Dock Crutchfield's children.
Edward Williard is not his son. I meet all his siblings at his funeral and there were only his brothers Paul, Will, and his sister Ruth.
My father (his third son) Williard was born in 1915 but died December 4th 1955 in Detroit and was buried in New Tazewell or near by December 7th, 1955. My father who was listed in the 1920 census as J Willard was often referred to as Jesse and I was name after Jess Willard who won the April 5th, 1915 fight in Cuba against Jack Johnson. I was told they held off naming my father until they saw who won the fight. He went by Willard or Jesse and sometimes Ricky which my mother said was for his middle name Richard. It is where my middle name comes from.
Ruth who was born sometime before or during the illness that caused Lilly's death. She does not show up in the 1920 Dock Crutchfield Census as Ruth was raised by an aunt with the last name of Noe. (SP?) It could have been Lilly's sister or a married sister of Dock or (although unlikely) a single sister of Lilly if the family was Noe If I can ever track down Ruth's married name I may learn more as she had a few children. I met her and them during the trip to Tazewell for my father's memorial service and burial. All I remember about that was that we had to go up a mountain or high hill to a fenced in graveyard which if I remember right was on somewhat of a slope.
I have been checking the free areas of ancestry.com and think I will have to see what I can get out of a six months membership assuming they have gotten over their automatic renewal policy of some years ago.
I will let you know of anything I can find anything more. One tiny tiny step at a time.
Once again thanks for your information.

James

The death record and census do not show Lillie Crutchfield being born the same year if Lillie is the Lillie Shanks in the 1900 Virginia Census in the Joseph Shanks family.
