John Dale was a carpenter. In 1772, Peter Goad, brother of Hannah Goad
Phillips and Alice Goad Dodson, later Rowler, mentioned above, settled an
obligation to John Dale of North Farnham Parish in Richmond Co., and the
wording of the deed is such as to permit Peter Goad, Carpenter and
cooper, to refer to John Dale as "his Kinsman".
By 1780 John Dale and his wife Lucy were of the Parish St. Stephens in
Northcumberland Co., there is a curious lease recorded in this county in
1780 between Samuel and Jane Tillery and John Dale which suggests a
relationship between these families. Some members of the Tillery family also moved to
Woodford County and are associated in the records with the Dales. john
and Lucy Dale had at least four children. After John's death abt 1778 Hannah
Dale, John's mother, took his children and moved to Woodford Co., Ky.

Virginia, USA. Tobias died on Jul 2, 1808 in Greasy Creek, Grayson Co., Virginia, USA
and was buried in Plantation Cem, Floyd Co., Greasy Creek, Virginia.
The notes from this entry are recorded from copies of an article, pp.
134-135, Carroll 1765-1815, The Settlements, by John Perry Alderman. I also had
the article recorded in the Winter 1992 Edition of Reflections, Claiborne
County Historical Society Newsletter.
I received a letter early in 1982 from Mrs. Phyllis G. Phillips, Rt 1,
Box 59A, Indian Valley, Va. 24105. That records the lineage of Tobias Phillips
and his 13 children.
The children are all from the two articles mentioned above but have been
edited through the years.
Tobias was listed on the Pittsylvania records in 1772 after its formation
in 1767 from what was Richmond Co., I presume, when he bought five slaves
from a Hannah Dodson: Two years later she sold him 150 acres, may have been a
relative. Yes, she was his grandmother Hannah Goad Phillips married
after her husband Tobias died to William Dodson of Richmond Co. about 1748.
I retrieved the date of death and the place in from the Ancestral File LDS
Ordinance Data (AFN:KJ9M-R6). The Church only lists one child Frances
but the other two sources I have list the rest.
From the Book CARROLL 1765 - 1815.
In August 1780, Col. Walter Crockett at Fort Chiswell advised sending the
militia into Greasy Creek and towards the Flower Gap. Thereafter the
Montgomery militia did from time to time come into the country searching
for Tories, because Tobias Phillips, Andrew Cock and William Bobbitt
furnished them with supplies. (Kegley, Adventures, Ip. 127)

The DAR PATRIOT INDEX contains the names of Revolutionary patriots, both
men and women, whose service (between 1774-1783) and identity have been
established by the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution from its
organization in October 1890. Included with the alphabetically listed
names are the dates of birth and death, names of wife or husband, rank or type
of service, and the State where the patriot lived or served. If pension
papers are known to exist, this fact is indicated.

The marriage doesn't fit but until I find out different I will rely upon the
information furnished me by Barbara Jo Reniker of Paris Tenn. filed in
Phillips information.
The marriage I first had for the son of George is evidently the marriage of
George himself to Mary Jennings.

1st Gov. of TN
source: King's Mountain & Its Heros - by Lyman Draper
Col. John Sevier & his officers - pg 418/419/420/421/422 (parts of )
"Near the close of the 17th century, the grandfather of the subject of this
sketch fled from his native Paris, on account of religious persecution &
settled in London. The family name of Xavier was now Anglized to Sevier. Here
he married a Miss Smith, and had 2 sons, Valentine and William, who, when scarcely grown,
ran away and took passage for America. This was not far from 1740. Among their
fellow-passengers were several young men of a wild and sporting character, from
whom Valentine Sevier acquired habits of gambling and dissipation. Landing at
Baltimore, he subsequently married a Miss Joanna Goode and settled in then
Augusta, now Rockingham Co, in the Valley of VA, 6 miles south-west of where
the little village of New Market, was subsequently located. Here he opened a farm,
and carried on trade with the Indians and here John Sevier was born Sept 23,
1745. After the Indian War of 1755 broke out, the family removed to safety to
Fredericksburg, where they remained nearly 2 years and where young Sevier
attended school. Returning to his old home in the Valley, Valentine Sevier
found his domicil had been burned by the Indians. The cabins were rebuilt, and trade
commenced. John Sevier was sent to Staunton to school. "
"He now engaged with his father in trade; and in 1761, before he had turned of
17, he married Miss Sarah Hawkins, cleared up a farm and engaged in excursions
against the Indians. He laid out the village of New Market, and for some time
he kept a store and inn, and carried on a farm; and then engaged in
merchandizing in the neighboring village of Middletown. "
"About 1771, he visited the Holston country carrying some goods with him for
trade, and repeated the visit in 1772. Later in 1773, John Sevier removed his
family to the Holston country & first located in the Keywood settlement, on the
north shore of Holston, half a dozen miles from the Shelbys. Before his removal
from VA, he had been commissioned a Captain by Gov Dunmore. "
"He was at Watauga Fort, when attacked, July 21, 1776. - At day break, when
there was a large number of people gathered there, and the women were outside
milking the cows, a large body of Cherokees fired on the milkers; but they all
fortunately escaped to the fort. Among the young girls, thus engaged , was
Catharine Sherrill, who, when she reached the gate, found it shut; but equal to
the emergency, she threw her bonnet over the pickets and then clambered over
herself, and, as she jumped within, was caught in the arms of John Sevier - her
future husband."
A warm attack on the fort ensued, during which Capt. Sevier thought he killed
one of the Indians. A man stole out of the stockade at night, went to the Holston,
when a large party marched to the relief of the beleaguered garrison.
It was because the people refused to join and cooperate with the enemies of their
country that the savages were instigated to murder them, destroy their crops and
improvements and drive off their cattle and horses.
John Sevier was among the foremost in the defense of the Watauga and
Nolachucky settlements. He had been elected Clerk of the first self
constituted court in 1775 and in 1776 he was chosen one of the
representatives of the united settlements to the North Carolina Covenetion
at Halifax and took his seat, securing the establishment of the district
of Washington. Hastening back home, he reached there in season to serve
on Christian's expediation against the Cherokees at the head of a fine
company of riflemen and also, at Col. Christian's request, he acted as a
spy during the campaign. He continued his services, till the conclusion
of the treaty at Long Island of Holston in July 1777. In the Fall of that
year, he was appointed Lieutenant Col. for Washington County. During the
period 1777-1779 the Indians, Tories and horse thieves required Col.
Sevier's constant vigilance.
" In the summer of 1780, he was left in defense of the settlements, while
Maj.Charles Robertson led the Watauga troops on the campaign in SC. During
their absence, Aug 14, having sometime previously lost his wife, he was married to
Miss Catharine Sherrill. "
His gallant services at King's Mountain cannot be too highly extolled.
December 16, following, he defeated the Cherokees at Boyd's creek, killing
13 and taking all their baggage, and then joined Col. Arthur Campbell on
an expedition against the holstile Indian towns. On the 3rd of February,
1781, he was made a full Colonel and in March, he led a successful foray
against the Middle Cherokee Settlements, killing about thirty of their
warriors, capturing 9 prisoners, burning 6 towns and bringing off about
200 horses.
Having been appointed by General Greene, one of the Commissioners, to
hold a treaty with the Indians, a conference took place with the Cherokees
at the Long Island of Holston in July, Colonel Sevier and Major Martin
attending, but without any permanent results. In the autumn of this year,
Col. Sevier served under Generals Greene and Marion in South Carolina and
in 1782, he carried on a campaign against the Cherokees.
In November 1784, he was appointed Brig. Gen., which he declined becuase
of his leadership in the effort to establish the republic of Franklin.
During the period of 1784 to 1788, he was made its Governor and defender.
He was apprehended by the North Carolina authorities, on a charge of
rebellion against the State and conveyed to Morganton, where he was
rescued by a party of his friends and returning home, he had a campaign
against the Indians. As the East Tennesseeans were divided in sentiment,
the Franklin Republic, after a turbulent career of some four years, ceased
to exist. In 1789, General Sevier was chosen a member of the Legislature
of North Carolins, when an act of oblivion was passed and he was
re-installed as Brig. Gen. In 17980-91, he was elected to represent the
East Tennessee district of North Carolins in Congree. when Tennessee was
organized into a Territory, he appointed by Present Washington a Brig Gen
in the militia and he continued to protect the frontier settlements,
carrying on the Hightower campaign against the Cherokees in 1793. In 1798
he was made a General in the provisional army.
On the organization fo state government in 1796, General Sevier was chosen
The first Gvernor and successive re-elections was continued in that one
office till 1801. In 1802, he served as a Commissioner in running the
boundary line between Tennessee and Virginia. He again served as Governor
from 1803 to 1809 and then a term in the State Senate. He was chosen to a
seat in Congress in 1811, serving during the war, on the important
committee on miliary affairs, until 1815 when President Madison appointed
him one of the Commissioners, to ascertain the boundary of the Creek
territory and died while on that service, in camp, on the east side of the
Tallapoosa, near Fort Decatur, Albama, September 24, 1851, closing a busy,
usefull life at the age of 70 years. As proof of the love and
veneration of his neighbors and friends, while absent in the Creek
Country, they had again elected him to Congress without opposition. In
the laguage of the distinguished Hugh L. White, who had served under him
in the old Indian wars, General Sevier was considered in his day, among
the most gallant, patriotic, and useful men in the country where he lived.
Valentine Sevier, so of Valentine Sevier and Joanna Goad, was born in what
is now Rockingham County, Virginia about 1747 and settled at an early
period in East Tennessee. He was a Sergeant and one fo the spies at the
battle of Point Pleasant where, says Isaac Shelby, he was distingished for
vilglance, activity and bravery. He subsequently served in the Indian wars
in East Tennessee and commanded a company at Thicketyt Fort, Cedat
Springs, Musgrove's Mill and King's Mountain. He was the first Sheriff of
Washington County, a justice of the court and rose in the militia to the
rank of a Colonel. He removed to the mouth of Red River on Cumberland,
now Clarksville, where he was attacked by Indiana November 11, 1794,
killing and wounding several of his family. After long suffering from
chronic rheumatism, he died at Clarksville, February 23, 1800 in his 53rd
year. His widow survived until 1844 in the 101st year. His younger
brother, Robert Sevier, who also commanded a company at King's Mountain
Country, they had again elected him to Congress without opposition. In
the laguage of the distinguished Hugh L. White, who had served under him
in the old Indian wars, 'General Sevier was considered in his day, among

(94) Andrew5 COCKE, (Mary4 GOAD, John3, Abraham2, Richard1 GOURD)
was born in 1740 in Va, and married (260) Penelope WARD who was born
about 1750 in Va.
From the book Carroll the Settlements. pg. 40
Andrew was the son of John and Elizabeth (Goad) Cock. Evidence leaves
little doubt but that the primise is correct. He was probably born in the
Bedford/Pittsylvania area inthe late 1740's. The tradition is that he
married twice. The name of the first wife is unknown, but the second was
Penelope Ward Clifton, said to have been the widow of a John Clifton, whom Andrew
married about 1782. Andrew came to Burks Fork in 1772 with his father. From the
entries and claims made before the Land Commissioners in 1782, it is
clear that Andrew settled first on burks Fork near the mouth of Brannons Branch, for
that was the tract which he had partially surveyed in 1774 for 102 acres.
Andrew acquired several tracts of land in the early days of Montgomery Co.
Perhaps about 1780 Andrew moved from the Brannons Branch tract to another tract
near his father. He may have done so following the death of his first wife.
In 1777 he had taken the oath of allegiance to the revolutionary cause.
Many of neighbors were accused of being Tory in symathy, but he was not. He
did serve in Capt. William Bobbitt's militia company.
Elder Isaac Webb, his grandson says there were two children by the first
marriage, both daughters. Andrew owned 400 acres of land in Pittsylvania
Co. on Frying pan Creek and did not sell it until July 1783. They were not
taxed with slaves, horses or cattle. In May of 1782 (Summers, Annals) show that
Andrew furnished a beef for the Montgomery militia. John Cock, his
father, deeded Andrew his 250 acres on burks Fork in 1787 and it was his first
home site. In 1793 Grayson Co. was established and he became prosperious being
considered for sheriff of the county in 1807 and 1809 and he was
ultimately appointed as Justice of the Peace and given a seat on the county court.
He gave his daughter and son-in-law, Joseph and Rhoda Cock Day (Grayson D.B.
2-503) the Puncheon Camp tract of land and a larger tract on Brannons Branch to his son
James. He gave Andrew Webb 117 acres on Snake Creek and gave Francis Durrett 65
acres on Big Reed. All these transactions were in 1809. Later he divided the
Valentine Cock inheritance among three of his sons-in-law: Thomas Quesenberry,
John Webb and John dickerson in 1815, 1818 and 1820 respectively. In all Andrew
conveyed 1494 acres in present day Carroll anddied owning 326 more. Most of it was
given to his children. Following are a list of the 11 children of
Andrew Cock as written by Elder Isaac Webb his grandson.
1. Rhoda Cock Abt 1775 fist marriage Married Joseph Day Aug. 10, 1796.
died 1827.
2. Elizabeth Cock is the other daughter of the first marriage married W.
Sweeny.
3. James Cock, born abt 1783, the oldest of the second marriage. Married
Elizabeth Richardson.
4. John cock, born abt 1786, married Jane Phillips and died in the 1870's.
5. Penelope Cock, born abt. 1788, married Francis Durrett.
6. Catherine Cock, born abt 1790, married Andrew Webb.
7. Phariba Cock, born about 1790, was Catherine's twin according to Elder
Isaac.
8. Susanna Cock may have been older than the twins, but Elder Isaac Lists
her as the eights. On Aug. 27, 1805 Andrew Cock was surety for the marriage
bond of John Bolt and Susanna cock in Grayson County. Susanna married Silas
Williams on Oct. 5, 1805 and it is pursumed the first marriage never took
place.
9. Tobitha cock, born in 1796 died in 1874 and married thomas
Quesenberry. died on July 2, 1874.
10 Hannah Cock, born Jan. 6, 1800 and died June 2, 1890 married John Webb
on Oct. 17, 1815 in Patrick Co.
11 Mary Cock, born in 1802, died in 1890 married John Dickerson on Aug
5, 1819 and they also lived onsome ofher father's Snake Creek land. died June 3,
1890.
There is some unresolved confusion as th the antecedents of Penelope Ward
Clifton. Elder Isaac Webb wrote that Penelope, second wife of Andrew
Cock, was the daughter of James and Nancy Brown Ward, and that she had four
children by John Clifton, her first husband. Two of the four died in infancy and the
two who lived were Nancy and Sarah who married W. Bobbitt and T. Jennings.
The Jennings tradition is much to the same effect: that Penelope was a Ward,
that she married John Clifton who lived near Clifton's Forge onthe James River
and who died in the Revolution.
There were two Clifton children raised by Andrew Cock:
1 Nancy Clifton, born about 179, who married William bobbitt Jr. and
moved away in the 1840's and
2. Sarah Clifton, born about 1781, who married Thomas Jennings, raised a
large family on buckhorn Creek, and died in 1855.

Althought direct parentage of Reuben Cock has not been proven except for the
death record of his daughter Rachel Nester, which lists her parents as Reuben
and Rhoda, there is no mention in the old records of Reuben's spouse.

James Goad of Montgomery County, Virginia. p. 26
The 1771 will of John Goad of Bedford County, Virginia named his children
and the presumably oldest son of each of his four sons. James Goad was
named as Abraham's oldest son. James married Mary Collier on July 24,
1786 in Pittsylvania County and was apparently born about 1765 or earlier.
Census records conflict.
When James was over 75 years of age, he accompanied his grandsons, John
and Aaron B. Goad, to Kanawha County, West Virginia (Then Virginia) in the
early 1840's The census of 1850 Kanawha County shows him and John living
with the family of Aaron B. and gives the age of James as 92. That would
date the year of his birth as about 1758.
Mary Collier, wife of James, was his second cousin as her parents are
believed to have Aaron and Elizabeht Goad Collier, she being a daughter of
Abraham Goad of Pittsylvania County. All six of their children remained
in the Carroll-Floyd area in Virginia to raise large families whose
descendants own a fair portion of that part of Virginia today.

Margaret Peggy JENNINGS, who was born in 1768 in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, USA.
Thomas (Tommie) was married to Sarah BETTS.
The book Carroll 1765-1815 says clearly that
"Thomas Phillips married Polly Goad in 1798 in Montgomery County and went
to Tennessee with his father-in-saw, Abraham Goad. It says that little is
known of Joseph. Mrs. Phyllis G. Phillips says of this same family that Thomas
was married a second time to Sarah Betts and from that marriage lists 4
children.
Polly would have had to have a son Johnathan because Jehu Phillips in and
article reprinted in the Cumberland Cronicle, Scott Co., TN in 1904, says that
Tommie and his brother Joseph and Tommies son Johnathan, whether Johnathan is
Tommies or Josephs I can't tell by the way this is phrased, moved from what is now
(1904) Scott Co. VA and Josh Goad which could be Abraham Goad refered to in the
Carroll 1765-1815 book. If anyone has this infomation please contact me.
"Reminiscences of Pioneer Days in Scott County, Tennessee"

About 1803 Tommie Phillips, his brother Joseph Phillips and his son
Johnathan Phillips and Josh Goad all moved from what is now Scott County, Virginia
(1904) and settled about two miles south of Huntsville on what is now known as
the Vanderpool place. In part six of his article Jehu says " My grandfather,
Tobie Phillips lived in Virginia and owned about 60 negros at one time. After
he died and when I was about 18 years old I went with my father (Joseph
Phillips) and Uncle John Phillips to Virginia to see my grandmother Phillips.
She then had 42 slaves on her plantation.

Ayers went to Anderson Co. later Scott Co. Tn. with his father.
Ayres Goad of Greene County, Indiana - p.30
It is said that Ayres Goad came to Indiana from Tennessee with the James
Roach family about 1820. Margaret "Peggy" Goad, daughter of Ayres,
married Joshua Roach, son of James, and this couple came to Indiana about
1829. All settled in the vincinity of what is now Walnut Grove.
The burial place of Ayres Goad and wife Edith is not known, but at least
three of their children and many, many descendants are buried at Walnut
Grove.
The Greene County Goads were marked by two strong proclivities: (1) A
tendency not to go far out of the Goad family when choosing a mate, with a
strong preference for first cousins and (2) a marked tendency to have
twins, a phenomena. Littleton by 1860 had fathered three sets of twins.
In Peyton's household in 1870 are ten children all under the age of ten.
Some could be nieces/nephews or foster children as two are four years old
and three are listed as being age nine.
As to further intermarriage between these Indiana Goads and their kin, the
records show as follows: Between 1833 and 1876, Goads four times chose
mates named Jones, three times their mates had the last name of Roach.
Clement Quillen Goad married four time, the last two wives both being
daughters of his uncle, Peyton Goad. Margaret who he wed in 1869 and
Sally in 1875. Aaron Goad married Fanny Jones in 1833. In 1837, Peyton
married Sophia Jones. Henry's second wife was Mary Roach (m. in 1864).
The above Clement, son of Littleton, took as his first wife in 1858, Lucy
Roach.
It goes on. Jordan Goad, son of Littleton, married his first cousin
Lucinda, daughter of Peyton, in 1856. Littlebury, son of Peyton, married
a widow Sophia Watson, daughter of Peyton's brother, Littleton. In 1865,
Abraham Goad, another son of Littleton, married Sarah Goad. She was born
in 1835 so could have been a daughter of Aaron and Fanny. In 1833, a
Littlebury married in Greene County, Anne Jackson. Their wedding was on
July 29, one day after the marriage of Aaron Goad.
In 1850, Ayres and Edith Goad were living among their children and
grandchildren in Greene County, Indiana, both age 70, both born in
Virginia. Ayres died in 1855 and his amended will was filed with the
Greene County court on September 16, 1855. Ayres left all his land to two
sons, Henry and Peyton. These were the two younger sons and the older
sons may have previously been given land by their father. Edith was still
living at this time and was provided for in the will. She probably died
during the next five years, as she is not found on the 1860 census.
