Clippings from the Claiborne County Progress - October 23, 1969

Soon after he left for Vietnam Leon Barnard was killed by a snipers bullet.  I spent Leon's last night in Tazewell with him sitting at the Frostee Freeze Drive-In. I have been corrected by the soldier that flew back with Leon from Vietnam after his death. Jackie Campbell, who was then fighting against Communism in South Vietnam as a soldier in the 101st said that from his report Leon was killed by what was called a "Bouncing Betty" cluster type mine. From the website Vietnam and the Turbulent Times Dictionary and Gazetteer - Bouncing Betty - (DH-10) A conical three pronged mine. - The bouncing betty mine would jump about three feet in the air when triggered, and explode at waist level.
