Descendants of James DOAK

FIRST GENERATION

(1) James1 DOAK was born about 1670 at Ulster, Ireland, and married (2) ELIZABETH who was born about 1674 at Ulster(?), Ireland.

Hi!
As you were kind enough to give me a little infomation on Samuel Doak, III and his family, I thought I'd pass along what little I have on the rest of the family. One thing that I am needing verified is the marriage of Isabella DOAK to John MILLIGAN I. What few records I have say that they were married September 28, 1786 in Augusta County, VA, but there are no copies of anything to back this up. Several people in the family have disputed the fact that Isabella DOAK was married to John MILLIGAN I. If the Library of Virginia is going to be closed for several months to outside requests, where does one send for information of this sort?

Ok, here goes:

1. Samuel DOAK I, born in 1690, buried in Antim Co., Ireland, province of Ulster, m. _______. They had 9 children (all born in Ireland):
    2. Samuel DOAK II, b. 1716 in Ireland, d. May 19, 1772, m. 1736 to Jane Mitchell aboard ship to America.
    3. John DOAK, b. 1712, m. Mary Wilson
    4. Nathaniel DOAK, b. 1713
    5. Robert DOAK, b. 1714, d. September 24, 1796, m. __ to Hannah Breckenridge
    6. David DOAK, b. 1715, d. October 2, 1787, m. ___ to Mary ________
    7. Thankful DOAK, m. John Finley

My apologies to the FINLEY Researcher whose E-mail is below. I was guilty of not deleting an original download from the LDS datafile that named 13 children of John FINLEY and Thanful DOAK. I was so deluged with information with this file at one time that I admit getting it created became an obsession and therefore caused this oversight. Again I apologize.

All right you have me thoroughly confused on the Finleys.
My ancestor is George Finley who removed to Logan Co KY. Had daughter Elizabeth who married Peter Hay.
This is the son of th John Finley/Thankful Doak who lived on Middle River and had 8 children. So the Elder at Tinkling Springs is the South River John Finley .
So the confusion comes from both John Finley having children baptized at Tinkling Springs and the proximity of the residences. I have a conglomeration of records I believe. Do you have a clean accurate gedcom file that I can reference to clean up. I do this as a hobby and want it accurate as possible. Thanks Kathy Hall

(8) Samuel2 DOAK, (James1 DOAK) was born about 1710 at Ulster, Ireland, and about 1740 at CHESTER CO, Pa, married (34) Jane MITCHELL who was born about 1710 at Ireland. Samuel died in 1771 at Augusta Co, Va.

From Historic Greene Co., Tn and It's People, 1783 - 1992\

The first Doaks in this area were Samuel Doak (1749-1830) and his wife Ester Houston Montgomery (1760-1807). His father, also Samuel Doak, emigrated from northern Ireland about 1740, along with three brothers and two sisters.

He married Jane Mitchell enroute, and they settled in Augusta Co., Va near Lexington. The family roots go back to Scotland, possibly Ayrshire.

The Samuel Doak who came to Tennessee was interested in education and ministry.

After graduating from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton) in 1775, he taught at Hampton Sydney and studied for the ministry. He was licensed to preach in 1777 and ordained about a year later. He came to htis area about 1777. In 1780 he started Martin's Academy later named Washington College. In this period he orgainized several churches including one in Greenville.

In 1818 Samuel Doak and his son, Samuel Witherspoon Doak (1785-1864), founded Tusculum Academy in Greene County.

THIRD GENERATION

(12) (22) George3 FINLEY, (Thankful2 DOAK, James1) was christened Jan 4, 1747/1748 at Tinkling Spring, Augusta Co, Va, married about 1769 at Prince Edward Co, Va (97) Jane FULTON. George died in 1831 at Wilson Co(?), Tn. (Two seperate records)

He also married on Jun 29, 1786, (98) Polly GAINES.
George3 FINLEY, (Thankful2 DOAK, James1) was christened Jan 30, 1742/1743 at Augusta Co, Va. George died after Aug 22, 1810 at Logan Co, Ky.

!Deeded 179 acres by John and Thankful, "a part of John Finleys land he now lives on," for 5 shillings, 17 November 1767 (Augusta County DB 14:104).

George and wife, Jane, deed this property to Robert Clendenen in 1772 (Augusta Co. DB 18:92). Obtains grant for 35 acres on Middle River (same area - see DB 27:268). In Washington County prior to 22 October 1785 when John Finley patents 312 acres on Wallaces branch of Holston River; deed references George Finley (Washington Co. DB 1:305). Buys and sells property between 1788 and 1801; wife always named Jean or Jane (Washington Co. DB 1:140, 1:407, 1:408, 1:409, 2:201, 2:467). Final deed dated 5 July 1805 shows George and Jane Findley living in KY (Washington Co. DB 4:165). George wrote his will

22 August 1810 in Logan County, KY. Names daughters Rachel, Elizabeth and Mary and husbands James Glenn, Peter Hay, Hugh Orr respectively. James Glenn was witness to Washington County deed in 1799 (2:201). See Carmen J. Finley, "The George Finleys of Augusta County, VA," The American Genealogist, 64 (October 1989):216-225.

(13) Robert3 FINLEY, (Thankful2 DOAK, James1) was christened Apr 21, 1745 at Augusta Co, Va, married in 1777 at Augusta/Wythe CO, Va (38) Sarah BRECKENRIDGE who was born in 1744 at Albemarle Co?, Va. Robert died after Jan 14, 1820 at Blount Co, Tn. Sarah died about 1821 at Blount Co, Tn.

!Received 5 shillings from father's estate. This Robert is most likely the ancestor of Alverta Brown Martin who wrote "Findley Family History; Our Grandfathers," Inglewood, CA: author, 1968, on file at Salt Lake City Mormon Library. France and Stout say he went to Lincoln County, NC prior to 1766 with his brothers John and Thomas [James]. While a Robert did appear in the 1790 census of Lincoln County, nothing has been found to tie him to the Augusta County Finleys. In addition, the Robert Finley found in Lincoln County died in 1791/92 leaving five minor children. He was too young to have been the son of John and Thankful. Martin believes Robert died in Blount County, TN.

!Alverta Brown claims he was living in the vicinity of George Breckenridge, his wife's parents, when he and Sarah were married in 1777. Montgomery County records do confirm there was a Robert Finley in the area. On 6 September 1777, both Robert Finley and George Breckenridge appeared on John Montgomery's list of persons who took the Oath of Allegiance (Kegley, "Militia of Montgomery County," p. 53). On 8 April 1778, Robert was fined for refusing to go out to the Frontier after being called on (OB 1778-1780, p. 338). On 5 May 1779,

Robert Finley was on jury in Montgomery County (OB 2, 1774-1782, p. 197). On 27 March 1783, Robert Finley had a survey made for 148 acres on Cove Creek, waters of Reed Creek, in Washington and Montgomery Counties; Breckinridge's line was mentioned in the description (Montgomery County Survey Book C:118).

!Alverta Brown claims Robert and his new family moved southward into the valley of the Holston River to the western border of North Carolina and then on to Blount County, Tennessee, where he first appeared on the tax records in 1800.

No records have yet been found for him between the period 1783 (last appearance in Montgomery County) and 1796 (first appearance in Blount County), with the possible exception of the militia noted below. However, by 1792 he would have been getting a bit old to serve as a private in the militia.

!Blount County was formed in 1795 from Knox County, which was formed from Greene and Hawkins in 1792. Greene was formed from Washington in 1783 and Hawkins from Sullivan in 1786; Sullivan from Washington in 1779. During the period 1792-1794, a John and a Robert Finley appeared as privates in McGaughey's Company, Hamilton District Militia, Territory south of the Ohio (Virgil D. White, "Index to Volunteer Soldiers, 1784-1811," Waynesboro, TN:

National Historical Publishing Co., 1987, p. 218). In Blount County Robert Finley first appeared in the records in 1796, along with John Finley, James Gillaspy and Alexander Read in a Grand inquest (LDS #888867, A-24). In May 1801, Robert Finley appear in court along with John Trimble, James Montgomery, Jr., Alex Reid, Wm. Gillaspie, Sr., Wm. Henderson (LDS #888867, A-251).

In November 1806, Robert Finley and Hugh Hackney appeared in court (LDS #888867, B-259). He appeared on the tax records in Blount County in 1800, 1801 and 1805. On 22 December 1818, Robert Findley sold 271 acres on waters of Nails Creek to Alexander Shadden of Jefferson County, TN (Blount Co. DB 2:53).

This is the last record in Blount County for Robert Finley up through 1834.

James Gillaspy, Alexander Read, John Trimble, William Henderson are all familiar Augusta County names.

!Marjorie B. Ratcliffe, 14046 Dunrobin Ave., Bellflower, CA 90706-2424

(310/867-7829), a descendant, gives Robert's date of death as 19 Dec. 1818, Blount County, TN.

!Alverta Brown Martin in her "Our Grandfathers," Inglewood, CA 1968, says Sarah's parents, George and Ann (Doak) Breckenridge, were married in 1742 when George lived in Albemarle County (St. Anne's Parish). Ann died in 1748; George moved to Augusta County in 1763, then on to Wythe County, where he died in 1790. His will, proved 29 September 1790, named daughter Sary Findley. She received 1/6 of "the remainder part of my household and kitchen furniture with all my stock sold." (Wythe Co., VA WB 1:1).

(14) Margaret3 FINLEY, (Thankful2 DOAK, James1) was born Nov 21, 1746 at Augusta Co, Va, and before 1769 at Augusta Co?, Va, married (49) John SHIELDS , son of James SHIELDS and Jean ARMSTRONG who was born in 1740 at Va. Margaret died after Sep 17, 1802 at Amhurst Co?, Va. John died before Sep 17, 1802 at Amherst Co?, Va.

!Married John Shields and moved to Amherst County. 2 September 1793,

David and Elizabeth Finley of Augusta deed 76? acres (transferred from Robert Clendenen to John Finley 21 March 1775) to John Shields of Amhurst (Augusta Co. D of T, 1-A:122). This was to settle a debt (Margaret's legacy) and included provisions also for James Finley. It also included 110 acres patented to David (VSL, grant #24, 1791-92, Reel 90:385). On 17 September 1802, Margaret Shields relinquished her right to the administration of her husband's, John Shields, estate, asking it be granted to their son, Robert Shields (Amhurst County DB I:405). Heirs named in the settlement: Rachel who intermarried with James Montgomery, Thankful, Peggy, Robert, William, Alexander, Nathan and Rebecka Shields. James and Rachel Montgomery, Thankful and Peggy Shields, all of Amhurst County relinquished their undivided share in 247 acres on Hat Creek for 100 pounds on 3 June 1805 (Amhurst County DB K:323-324).

(15) John3 FINLEY, (Thankful2 DOAK, James1) was born about 1751 at Augusta Co, Va, and on Apr 10, 1762 at NC?, married (64) Ann MILLER who was born at NC?. John died at Knox Co?, Tn.

!Stout (p. 104) gives birthdate as 11 Jan 1742 with baptism at Tinkling Spring, but this John is not shown with other siblings in Wilson's records (p. 474).

!According to Stout, he moved to Lincoln County (now Gaston), NC on south fork of Catawba, 1762. In 1766 fought in Capt. Adam Alexander's milita against Cherokees. In 1774 was with Capt. Evans Shelby at battle of Pt. Pleasant.

In 1780 was in Lt. Edmondson's Co. at battle of Kings Mountain. (Stout's 5-02-111). Granddaughter, Mary (Polly) through son, William, is said to have been the second wife of Davey Crockett.

!France says he enlisted in Captain Adam's Alexander company of NC militia on 7 June 1766 (NC State records vol. XII, page 396). He served with Lincoln men under Captain Evans Shelby in Battle of King's Mountain 7 October 1780.

France gives his age at death in 1818 as 76 years, 2 months.

!In father's will, written 17 August 1791, he received one bed and furniture at "my beloved wife's decease," (Augusta County WB 7:404). As noted above, France and Stout believe he moved with brothers Robert and Thomas [James] to NC prior to 1766. However, no evidence has been found to support this. In addition, there was a John Finley living adjacent to George Finley, proven son of John and Thankful, in Washington County, VA from about 1776 to 1792 (Lewis Preston Summers, "Annals of Southwest Virginia, 1769-1800," Baltimore: Genealogical PUblishing, 1970, pp. 957, 974, 1110, 1112, 1169, 1216, 1346; tax list of 1782 and 1786). This John Finley sold his 312 acres on Wallace's Branch, adjacent to George Finley on 31 October 1792 and was referred to as "of Knox County, Territory of United States Southwest of River Ohio" at that time (Washington County DB 1:305). See Carmen J. Finley, "The George Finleys of Augusta County, VA," The American Genealogist, 64 (October 1989):216-225. Carmen J. Finley, "The John Finleys of Knox County, Tennessee," Tennessee Ancestors, 9 (April 1993): 33-43.

!Other indications of migration to TN by descendants of John and Thankful exist. Alverta Brown Martin in her "Findley Family History," believes her ancestor, the brother, Robert, died in Blount County, TN. France claims that William Finley, father of Polly who married David Crockett, was a son of this John Finley, and that William died in Jefferson County, TN. William Finley's will has been found and verified, dated 2 April 1818. In it he names children:

James, William, Samuel, Jean Barns, Susanna Parks, Mary Crocket's children

(John, William, Polly), Kennedy (Jefferson County, TN WB 2:237-239).

!Bottom line. I do not believe he ever went to the Carolinas; rather he lived for a while in Washington County, Va. near brother George and then went to Tennessee. Listed children as given by Stout and France are copied here but should be viewed with extreme caution. Some of it may be correct, but primary research has not been done.

!Stout claims she is daughter of Thomas Miller, Revolutionary soldier of NC. France says Ann Miller is daughter of David Miller, who died 805, age 60 years, 3 months, 5 days (does 1805 refer to Ann or her father, David?).

Joe--
You are tapping into some of the unproven and controversial areas of Finley genealogy. I spent a fair amount of time trying to chase down the John Finley, son of John Finley and Thankful Doak, who was supposed to have gone to NC.

Could never find a trace of him that was backed up by primary records. What I did find was a John Finley living adjacent to George Finley (proven son of John and Thankful) in Washington County, VA. The son, John, went on to Knox County, TN and I wrote a paper on this search that was published in Tennessee Ancestors, vol. 9, no. 1, April 1993, p. 33. Did I send you a copy of that? I haven't kept track.

The upshot is that John and Thankful did have a son John (named in will), and I believe with about 95% certainty he is the John Finley who ended up in Knox County in 1792. Now if we leave out the stuff about NC and believe the rest of what Stout says, the Mary Finley who married Joseph Sevier and the William Finley who was Davy Crockett's father-in-law were children of this John Finley. Hence Mary and William were brother and sister and Mary was the aunt of Mary "Polly" Finley. William left a will in Jefferson County, TN that named Polly's children as John, William, and Polly. I am following this with a copy of his will.

Also sending a GEDCOM of the four generations of Finleys beginning with John and Thankful. There is a fair amount of information in the notes attached. However, keep in mind that there may well be errors in the fgs of John, son of John and Thankful. In fact I just noticed that Stout says Mary Finley married John Sevier not Joseph.

I really have no information on the Rockingham Finleys and do not recall the name Breeding associated with any of mine. However, I do have Finleys in the New River area and Stalnakers in the Clinch River area.

Good luck---

Carmen Finley

(16) Jean3 FINLEY, (Thankful2 DOAK, James1) was born Feb 16, 1743/1744 at Augusta Co, Va, and about 1764 at Augusta Co, Va, married (75) Joseph TRIMBLE. Joseph died before Oct 29, 1789 at Augusta Co, Va.

!Named in father's will to receive a mare and negro woman "at my wife's death."

Her son, John Trimble, also received a saddle and bridle (Augusta County WB 7:404). She was widowed prior to 29 October 1789, when her deceased husband was mentioned in the will of John Trimble, Sr. (Augusta County WB 7:288).

!Birthdate of 16 February 1744 is given by Stout, not supported by Tinkling Spring Baptismal records during a period when other of his children were baptized there.

!Reference was made to "grandson, John Trimble, son to son Joseph, deceased, infant," in the will of John Trimble, Sr., 29 October 1789 (Augusta Co WB 7:288). David Finley, son of John & Thankful (Doak) Finley, & brother of Jean Finley Trimble, was appointed guardian of John Trimble, orphan of Joseph Trimble, 15 December 1789 (Augusta County Court Records, Order Book XXI:181).

John Finley's will of 17 April 1791 refers to daughter Jean and her son, John Trimble (Augusta County WB 4:404).

!Joseph is listed with his family in John Farley Trimble, "Trimble Families of America," (Parsons, WV: McClain Printing, 1973), p. 212. His parents, John and Ann Trimble were married in Ireland. Only known birth dates are for his sister Jean, baptised 20 October 1741 and brother, James, born 1 June 1746.

Children:

(17) James3 FINLEY, (Thankful2 DOAK, James1) was born about 1751 at Augusta Co, Va, and on May 16, 1769 at Staunton, Augusta Co, Va, married (77) Keziah MARTIN who was born Apr 3, 1753 at Staunton, Augusta Co, Va. James died on Dec 14, 1830 at Whitley Co, Ky and was buried at Siler Cemetery, Williamsburg, Whitley Co, Ky. Keziah died on Apr 5, 1831 at Tyes Ferry, Whitley Co, Ky and was buried at Siler Cemetery, Williamsburg, Whitley Co, Co.

!Named in will of John Finley, dated 17 August 1791 and proved 20 September 1791 (Augusta Co. WB 7:404) and received "one hundred and twenty pounds Virginia Currency with interest from this date." James' legacy was specified in a subsequent deed of transfer from his brother, David the executor, to John Shields, his brother-in-law [husband of Margaret] (Augusta County Deed of Transfer 1-A:122). Note: Both the copy of the original will and Chalkley's abstract incorrectly list a son, Thomas, in place of James, but the 1793 deed of transfer clearly specifies James. It is commonly thought that this James died in Whitley County, KY. A will does exist there dated 15 December 1824 for a James Finley (LDS #532,092, Wills of Whitley County, KY). In his will he named Keziah, wife; children, James, Marry, Travis, Elizabeth, Robert. A descendant Lynda Chalk Welch, 5535 Willow Lane, Dallas, TX 75230 has done extensive work on this line. She claims his will is recorded in Whitley Co. WB I:39.

In the 1810 census of Knox (Whitley was formed 1818 from Knox) County, KY there was a James Finley, age 45+, with 1 male 10-16 and one female 26-45.

Note: It looks as though almost no original research has been done on this line since Albert Finley France. Lynda Welch's data differs a bit, but not significantly. The vital data given here are taken from Lynda.

(19) David3 FINLEY, (Thankful2 DOAK, James1) was born about 1761 at Augusta Co, Va, and on Mar 10, 1791 at Augusta Co, Va, married (90) Elizabeth WILSON.

!The first appearance of this David Finley in Augusta County is in 1786 when he appears on the tax list with John Finley in George Moffatt's area (John Moffatt is shown on Hildebrand's map of Beverly Manor with 491 acres on Middle River acquired 1739). David also appears on tax list with John in 1787 and is listed as "self and son David." There are no other records for a David Finley prior to this time. On March 9 1791 David and Elizabeth Wilson, daughter of Joseph filed intent to wed (Chalkley 2:295) and the marriage was solemnized 10 March 1791 by Rev. Archibald Scott (Col. Thomas Hughart, "Marriage Records of Augusta Co., VA, 1785-1813," DAR, 1970, p. 12). David received all his father's land (Augusta County WB 7:404). David subsequently patented 110 acres next to John Finley's land, 18 November 1791, in which he was referred to as "assignee of John Finley," (VSL, grant #24, Reel 90:385). He and wife, Elizabeth, transferred his patent plus 76 (?) acres of John Finley's to settle debts with John Shields (husband of sister, Margaret) and James Finley (Augusta Co. D of T 1-A:122).

In 1794 they sold what appeared to be all remaining property ... 648 acres, 3 parcels of 300, 238 and 110 acres (Augusta Co. DB 28:268). No further records for David in Augusta County, nor has he been found elsewhere to date.

!There is some indication David may have gone to Montgomery County, KY (formed from Clark County 1797). Family records of Annabel Wesson, 5555 Montgomery Drive, Santa Rosa, CA give the names of 4 siblings born there between 1792 and 1802. They include John, Joseph Wilson (David's wife's father was Joseph Wilson), Thankful Sallie (David's mother was Thankful) and Ebenezer. In addition, one of Mrs. Wesson's letters includes a reference to a cousin, Sam Berry. When David sold out the last of his Augusta County property in October 1794, Jas Berry was a witness (DB 28:268). David was not positively identified as present in Montgomery County, KY, but his son Ebenezer was there in the 1830 census.

!Joseph Wilson named as her father when he gave consent to her marriage, 9 March 1791 (Chalkley 2:295). Marriage record in Chalkley 2:349.

(18) Thankful3 FINLEY, (Thankful2 DOAK, James1) was born about 1756 at Augusta Co, Va, and married (89) MC CARTER.

!Her father's will stated, "I give and bequeath to my beloved daughter Thankfull McKarter six shillings Currancy..." (Augusta County WB 7:404).

Her whereabouts has not been established although when a John Finley married Margaret Kerr in Knox County, in 1793, a Jeremiah McCarter served as bondsman (Knox County, TN Marriages, Archives - Knox County Public Library, p. 337).

Wife's Notes... " James McTeer, of Maryland and Virginia, married sister of Rev. Samuel Doak.

James McTeer, a brother of Andrew McTeer, and the uncle of Robert McTeer, the earliest settler of Blount County, TN. married Elizabeth Doak, the sister of Rev. Samuel Doak, the famous Tn pioneer and minister. ELIZABETH DOAK was the daughter of SAMUEL DOAK and and his wife JANE MITCHELL, and brother of John , David, (Rev) Samuel, and Robert Daok. Her sister Mary Doak married Abner Weatherly, who was the Sherriff of Gulliford County, North Carolina (Buffalo Church section) succeeding Zaza Brashears, whose sister Martha Brashears married David Morrow, as heretofore shown in the Morrow notations herein.

Another brother-in-law of this James McTeer was William Brown, who married Jane Doak and had among others a son Samuel Brown, who married the daughter of Edward Murphy and is mentioned in the will of Mary McTeer - widow of Frizzell McTeer, in the year 1829, down in Georgia.

James McTeer died in Augusta County, Virginia and left a will which was proved at the September term of the court in 1793. This will was witnessed by Samuel McCutcheon, John Wallace, and David Doak, James Mitchell and Samuel Doak. His children, according to his will and that of his son, Samuel McTeer (in 1803) were: 1. William McTeer 2. James McTeer 3. Samuel McTeer 4. Sarah McTeer 5. Elizabeth McTeer

James McTeer, the son of James McTeer and ELIZABETH DOAK died leaving will in Augusta County, VA. in 1812 and his legatees were: 1. Wife Jane (Jane Mitchell) 2. William McTeer 3. Mitchell McTeer 4. Elizabeth McTeer 5. Isabella McTeer 6. Brother, William McTeer Executors were: Wife Jane Thomas Mitchell, Jr. 0Daniel Henderson (Thomas Mitchell, Jr. was his wife's brother)

Witnesses were: Thomas Jackson Robert Doak Dorcas M. Doak Nancy Doak ."54 [3/26/96 This may be a DIFFERENT Elizabeth Thankful Doak. Many writers seem to be confusing her with the Daughter of Samuel the immigrant.]

(36) Samuel3 DOAK, (Samuel2 DOAK, James1) was born Aug 1, 1749 at Augusta Co., Va, and married (101) Esther Houston MONTGOMERY, daughter of John MONTGOMERY and Esther HOUSTON, who was born in 1760 at Augusta Co., Va. Samuel died on Dec 12, 1830 at Washington Co., Tn. Esther Houston died in 1807 at Greene Co., Tn.

Rev. Samuel Doak was married twice. His first wife was Esther Houston Montgomery, daughter of John Montgomery and his wife Esther Houston. His second wife was a Margaretta Houston McEwen, widow of Alexander McEwen. Here we have an exampel of Tennessee Cousin Proclivity, in that, the first wife of Rev. Samuel Doak was a first cousin of Rev. Sam Houston, and the second wife was a sister of Rev. Samuel Houston. Also Rev. Samuel Houston was related to the famous Gen. Samuel Houston, as will later appear, and not far removed as a close relative of the Rev. Samuel Doak and his wives.

Rev. Doak was the first president of Washington College near Greenville, Tn, which was first chartered under the name of Martin Academy. His son, Dr. John Whitfield Doak, succed him as President, in later years.

Samuel Doak was in the Battle of Kings Mountain, October 7, 1780.

One of the more confussing lineages is that of Isabela Doak, daughter of Samuel DOAK I .  There were two Isabella or Isabel DOAK that married both a John MILLIGAN and a John MILLIKEN.   I have information on both.  The correct lineage was sent to me by Tom Milligan in April 2008.  He sent a PDF file that has his lineage down form John MILLIKEN and Isabel DOAK.

The incorrect lineage from James Doak is one of another Revolutionary Solidier John Milligan but he married an Isabel DOAK not descended from this line.  His lineage can be found HERE.

!Data from France.

Actually John Kerr's property was across the river from Goochland.

Cumberland County Deed Book 5, p. 2 states "22 October 1771 John Kerr bought from William Cunningham a tract of land (91 1/2 acres) bounded by a line of marked trees from the Lands of John Johnson's Orphans and otherwise bounded by James River and the Lands of James Bagby and Samuel Hyde Saunder."

Solomons Creek runs through the property. There is a now a prison on or near the property owned by John Kerr. I have been close to the property but could not get on it.

My searches of the Goochland Courthouse, Virginia Archives and Virginia Historical Library records of Goochland show no trace of this John Kerr that I can find.

I don't know if he was an indentured servant or not. The Alexander Kerr of Williamsburg, believed by some genealogists to be the father of this John Kerr, was quite wealthy and a relative of Virginia Governor Spotswood.

However, I don't know who his father was so he might have been indentured.

It is also unlikely the John Kerr arriving at Yorktown as a Jacobite prisoner on the Elizabeth and Anne in January 1715 is this John Kerr. It is possible they are one and the same. It is also possible the Jacobite prisoner John Kerr may be his father.

Any suggestions you can make will be appreciated.

Someone pointed me to your Doak/Finley page. What a wealth of info you have collected! I have both Doaks and Finleys in my line. Perhaps you can help me with the Finley side?

I have a James Finley (7/4/1776-1853) born in VA and a Dorcas Doak (5/16/1786-8/24/1835) born in Augusta Co., VA. James and Dorcas were married 8/24/1805. The location of the wedding is unknown but assumed to be in VA since both came from VA. In 1806 they were in Adams County, OH where their son David D. was born. Dorcas is the seventh daughter of the David Doak that you list on your page as having married Eleanor Turner, Jennet Alexander, and Jennet Davis. I don't know which was the mother of Dorcas.

On your page you list the will of a William Finley, 3 April 1818, Jefferson County, Tennessee, WB 2:237-239. In that will William sites his son James and bequeaths a "large pot rack" to him. This William is the father of Mary Crocket (wife of Davy). Do you have any idea if this James could be my James? I've looked through your site and, unless I've missed something, this looks like the only James on your page that could be my James.

Anything you could add would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

He began to distinguish himself as a hunter. He lived there during the years of 1809-10, then moved to Franklin Co. and settled on Beans Creek, where he remained until the close of the WAR of 1812. When the Creek Indians opened hostilities by butchery at Fort Mimms, August 30, 1812 the malitia was called for the purpose of raising volunteers. Davy volunteered.

He was in Capt. Jones' Mounted Vols. They went to Beatty Srpings where he went with Major Gibson across the Tennessee River into Creek Nation as a spy.

He chose George Russell, son of Major Russell as a partner. They returned safely and reported to Gen. Coffee. Davy and 800 of Gen. Coffee's volunteers crossed the Tennessee river through Huntsville, Ala, and on the river to Muscle Shoals and Melton's Bluff, next to Black Warrior's Town, near the present city of Tuscaloosa, Ala. Davy asked permission of Gen. Coffee to go hunting and there he killed a bear. He fought in the battle at Fort Strother, Fort Talledega and the battle of Talledega. He then joined the Army for the Florida Expedition and rejoined Gen. Russell again to do battle with the British.

He returned to Tennessee to find his wife dying. After her death he was obliged to marry Elizabeth Patton, who had been left with two children after her husbands death, Davy felt his young children needed a mother. Davy soon moved from Lawrence Co. Tn because he thought it sickly. He moved to the head of Shoal Creek where he was appointed magistrate. when the Legislature added Giles Co. he was elected Col. of a regiment and became known as Col. Crockett

He was elected to the Legislature in 1821. After his term in Washington his next move was further west in Tennessee, to Obion Co. where there were few settlers. He was elected Justice of the Peace, and would sign his name with the following caption. "Be always sure you are right, then go ahead." He returned to the Legislature in 1823-24 opposing Gen. Andrew Jackson for U.S. Senator. He served 2 terms in Congress, 1827-33 but was defeated by the "Indian Bill" and Gen. Jackson in 1834.

During a trip to Philadelphia in 1823, he was presented his famous long rifle "Betsy" which contained the following inscription: "Presented to the Honorable David Crockett of Tennessee by the young men of Philadelphia." This inscription is on the barrel in gold, and near the sight is the motto: "Go ahead" in letters of silver.

Davy and five survivors gave their lives for freedom. Davy's last memoranda were dated March 5, and as he was slain March 6. He writes writes: "Pop, pop, pop! Boom, boom, boom! Throughout the day. No time for memorandums now, Go Ahead! Liberty and Independance forever!

General Castrillion, in command of the Mexican Army, was brave and not cruel, and disposed to save the prisoners. He marched them up to that part of the fort where stood Santa Anna and his murderous crew.

"The steady, fearless and undaunted tread of Colonel Crockett on this occasion, together with the bold demeanor of the hardy veteran had a powerful effect on all present. Nothing dauted, he marched up boldly in front of Santa Anna, and looked him sternly in the face while Castrillion addressed "his excellency,"

Sir, here are six prisoners I have taken alive, how shall I dispose of them?"

" Why do you bring them to me?" At the same time several officers plunged their swords into the bosoms of their defenseless prisioners. Col. Crockett seeing the act of treachery, instantly sprang like a tiger at the ruffian chief, but before he could reach him, a dozen swords were sheathed in his heart, and he fell and died without a groan, a frown on his brow, and a smile of scorn and defiance on his lips." The bodies of the slain were then thrown into a mass in the center of the Alamo and burned! Thus ended the life of one of the Nation's best, a man loved and honored by all who knew him. A man who had a keen sense of humor and justice to all people, freedom was his battle cry. So it was that David Crockett gave his life that his country might be free.

"Thermopylae had her messenger of defeat!

But the Alamo had none."

In the book Family History Including, Hughes, Henderson, Winston and Dalton compiled by Lucy Henderson Horton I thought the following appropriate as the Hughes mentioned is probably directly related to the same Hughes family and Fulkerson family that first settled Tazewell.

Archelaus Hughes, son of Col. Archelaus Hughes, who commanded a Virginia regiment during the Revolutionary War, and his wife, Mary Dalton, was born about 1771. Archelaus II married nancy Martin, daughter of William Martin and his wife, Rachel Dalton. Two brothers married sisters, and these sisters were their first cousins. At any rate Archelaus Hughes II had a son Archelaus M. Hughes III who came to Tennessee to live when a boy. He first made his home in Williamson County with his uncle, Gen. William Martin. From Williamson Co., he moved to Dresden, Tenn to live and while living there became a candidate for congress. His opponent was Davy Crockett.
Archelaus M. Hughes wrote to his uncle, Gen. William Martin, of Williamson Co., from Dresden, Tenn, Aug. 30, 1837, in which he says: "I was badly beaten for congress by young Crockett. No man could have beaten him at this time. I knew it, but as I was first out, I would not back down."

He wrote letter to brother, Harrison at Ione, Amador County, CA from Yale, New Haven, CT on 20 September 1862 asking for $300, saying he had been admitted to Yale, including cryptic comment, "It will take me four Years to graduate here. Don't know whether I can stand the Yankees that long or not---they fleece a man on every turn." He died less than four months later. In November 1865, George F. Britton, a classmate, wrote to brother Harrison informing him that a monument had been erected over his grave ... a brown stone indigenous to the climate, 11 feet high and engraved "Joseph W. On 12 May 1860 he left for California, across the plains with 5 wagons & ox-teams. The trip took 4 months. On 12 August 1860 he arrived in Calaveras County and shortly after went to Amador County, where he married Livonia Josephine Ray. In the fall of 1863 they moved to Contra Costa County where he leased 160 acres in the Tassajara Valley. In

October 1875 he purchased 1080 acres at the head of the Tassajara Valley where he farmed and raised stock. Finley Road which branches off Tassajara in Contra Costa County was named for him. He sold this in the fall of 1888 and moved to Sonoma County. Here he bought a 240 acre ranch 5 miles north of Santa Rosa (now Larkfield Estates) in the Mark West area. He raised hops, prunes, fruit hay, and turkeys. He died 5 July 1917 of cancer of the liver. (The above has been documented by Tina Faux, 4611 Glencannon Street, Santa Rosa, CA 95405 and is from biography from "History of Contra costa County, 1882," biography from "1897 Sonoma County Atlas," death notice of Lavonia Finley, biography in "Valley Pioneer of Danville, CA," marriage certificate of Harrison and Livonia, interview with Helen Finley Comstock, newspaper article in Press Democrat, 11 May 1949, Santa Rosa, "Here's Story of Nine Pretty Girls," family bible records).
