first cousin, Yerby Baskin, the son of Andrew Jackson and Cassanna Dacus

18. David Jefferson Baskin

Tipton County Heritage, November 11, 1987
David Jefferson Baskin (?-1885), the fifth child of Moses and Catherine
Adkinson Baskin, has more living descendants in Tipton County than any other of
Moses Baskin's children. David Jefferson Baskin was married twice in his
lifetime, his first wife presented him at least ten children and his second
wife gave birth to at least six children. Therefore, David J. Baskin had a
total of 16 children. David J. Baskin owned a farm on the southern edge of the
Burlison community, but he was never able to accumulate a large estate like his
brother, Andrew Jackson Baskin.

Daniel,

I only have two children of this couple although there may be more. I show William Leonidis Baskin (b. Abt 1847 d. ?), who married Elizabeth Jane Dawson (no dates) on 10 Aug 1866 and John Franklin Baskin (b. 10 Feb 1849 d. 30 Jul 1916), who married his first cousin, Malinda Jane Baskin (b. 1 Oct 1842 d. 12 Oct 1908) on 16 Dec 1868.

How does this compare with your data? Do you know who Louisa Adkinson's parents were?

Thanks,
Rob

Rob,

The information I have is the following: David Jefferson Baskin married Louisa Adkinson (ca.1829-mid 1860's), daughter of John Adkinson, in 1846. They had 10 known children: William Leonidas Polk "Lee" Baskin, John Franklin "Boney John" Baskin, Eliza Jane Baskin, Sarah Ann Baskin, Rosanna Baskin, David Buchanan "Buck" Baskin, Martha Catherine Baskin, Mary Mildred Baskin, Andrew Jackson Baskin, & Malvina Baskin.
David Jefferson also married Sarah (Dacus) Freeman. They had 6 known children: Mae Dora Emma Baskin, Charles Moses Baskin, Cynthia Alice Baskin, Thomas Roland, Olien Walter Baskin, & Magnolia "Maggie" Baskin. {Sarah Dacus was married to a Mr. Freeman, while in Arkansas. She had a few children by Mr. Freeman. Don't know their names or how many. Mr. Freeman died and she moved back to T.County. When she married David J. Baskin, she had one child who died soon afterward.}

To get a pretty full tree on the Baskin, go to:
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/b/a/s/Benjamin-C-Baskin/GENE8-0 001.html
This gives the line to Ireland. Hope this will help.

I am looking for more information on Malvina Baskin. I think she married a Richardson and moved to Portageville, MO.

Thanks, Daniel

Daniel,

Thank you for the additional information and link. Obviously, there were several more children of David Jefferson and Louisa (Adkinson) Baskin than I had in my database. However, you have provided me with some puzzling information that you might be able to help clarify. My great-great-great-grandfather was John Adkison (b. 1812 d. 5 Nov 1876) married to Martha (last name unknown). You indicated that John Adkinson was Louisa's father; however, Martha was born about 1815, so I do not think it was likely that my John and Martha were the parents of Louisa. Louisa was born in 1829, so assuming Louisa was Martha's child she would had to been only about 14 years old. In addition, you may or may not know that David Jefferson's parents were Moses and Catherine "Caty" (Adkison) Baskin of Roane Co., TN. I was wondering if you know of any ties that Louisa may have to either my John Adkison or Caty Adkison.

Thanks,
Rob

Rob,

I received most of my information from our local newspaper that did a report on Tipton County Heritage. This information was compiled by the Tipton County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. I'm not saying that all of the information is 100% correct, as our paper does have misprints. This was published in 1986 and 1987, and gives the history of the Baskin family. It did not give the wife of John Baskin. I will quote the paragraph about Moses and John Baskin:

Moses Baskin (ca 1779-1841), the patriarch of the Tipton County branch of the Baskin family, was raised in Washington, Green and Sevier counties, Tennessee. He was the son of a South Carolinian blacksmith, John Baskin. Moses Baskin married Catherine Adkinson (ca. 1782-?) on September 16, 1805, in Roane County, Tennessee. In the 1820's the Baskin family moved to Tipton County, Tennessee, and settled near the Holly Grove and Burlison communities.

I have also obtained information from visiting cemeteries. I have a lot more cemeteries to visit. Don't know if I'll be able to find David Jefferson Baskin and Louisa Adkinson Baskin. They should be buried around here somewhere, just don't know if their graves are marked.

Another thought is that they married awful early in those days!! It could very well be possible that your John married Martha at 14 years of age. My mother married at 15 years of age. Now we wouldn't even think of our children marrying that early, but they did and they stayed married for the most part to the same person until they died.

I will try to do more research to see if I can find anything else on Martha Adkinson.

Daniel

Sarah Dacus

David Jefferson Baskin married Sarah (Dacus) Freeman (1838-1902), the daughter
of William and Cynthia Dacus, in 1864. Sarah was the sister to Mrs. Andrew
Jackson (Cassanna Dacus) Baskin and Mrs. Rufus T. (Martha Helen Dacus) Baskin.
While Sarah was a young girl her father died near Holly Grove in 1848. Soon
afterward young Sarah Dacus and two of her sisters were sent to Yell County,
Arkansas, to live with their older brother James Alexander Dacus. While Sarah
was in Arkansas, she married a Mr. Freeman by whom she had a few children. Mr.
Freeman died and Sarah returned to Tipton County, Tennessee. When she married
David J. Baskin, Sarah had one child who died soon afterward.
