Hi I am Warren Dale Essary and may be able to help you on you family tree. The Parents of Elbert Essary are Thomas Joseph Necessary born about 1806 in Russell Co, Virginia and Elizabeth Ann Jennings born about 1803 in Washington Co, Virginia. Thomas and Elizabeth had seven Children. Thomas's father was William Necessary and Lucresy (last name Unknown). William got into some troubble of some kind and moved from Pennsylvania to Virginia and changed his last name to hid out. After the civil war and with Williams' death one third of his children went back to the name of Essary, but two thrids stayed with the name of Necessary. William was part of the Pennsylvnaia family, but just how he fits is unknown at this time. He may be a son of James Essery born about 1715 in England and settled in Delaware and Chester counties of Pennsylvania by 1748. I think it is more likely he is a grandson of this James, but which child he came from is unknown.

The possible known children were John Essery born 1744, Joseph Essery, and Thomas Essery. There were others of this family that could also be children of James 1715 as Jonathan and Nathan. There were two Thomas born about the same time. At this time I have not been able to prove just how William fits, but he did use the spelling of William Ess.

Ess is the root word of Essery or Essary which is from a Welch word that was spelt in Welch as Essworthy. Essworthy was pronounced as "Essery" and as the Welch language was phased out some of the family used the Welch spelling of Essworthy and this can be seen in Pennsylvania. Some used Essery and Essary which is the English spelling of the word Essworthy.
