Descendants of Heinrich Christoff SHULTZ

Notes

338. John F. SHULTS

The death record for John lists his father as "DAVE"? John, Martha, and five children (Debbie, Rachel, Elmer, Mary, and a 7-month old unnamed child (Delia?) appear in the 1900 Sevier Co, TN census. Can't find them in 1910. In 1920, John is in the 12th Dist of Cocke Co (Upper Cosby), with children: Eleanor, 24; Bead, 17; Crockett, 15, and Eva, 12.

339. George Washington SHULTS

Louisa's the daughter of Steward and Millie (Trentham) Ownby of Sevier Co, TN. George was a logger and was killed in an accident when a log rolled over him.

1247. Steward Ray SHULTS

His name also appears as "Stuart" and "Stewart" (his grandfather Ownby's name does also).

340. James Michael SHULTS

Rosa had a later marriage to Lawson Jenkins with children.

341. William Robert SHULTS

He was "Uncle Bob" to everyone. He and Annie went with, or followed, her father to northern Georgia in 1914.

AnnaLee Ervy MADDRON

She's a sister of Margaret who married Lewis Sutton and of Luvenia who married Lewis Shults.

345. John W. SHULTS

He was a Union Army veteran of the Civil War, Private, E Co, 2nd Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry (16 Sep 1862-6 Jul 1865). He was a wagoneer and teamster and saw extensive action in Middle Tennessee. According to his pension application he was wounded in the shoulder and breast and drew a pension for his wounds and other service-connected disabilities. After his death Margaret received his pension, $12.00 per month, until her death. John, his first wife Martha, and son Samuel were living in Polk Co, TN in 1860 but returned to Sevier County before 1866. John divorced Martha in Sevierville in July of 1866 and his children remained with him. John then married Margaret Wheat, the daughter of Levi and Catherine (Dillon) Wheat of Roane Co, TN. Margaret's first husband, William Tudor, had been conscripted by the Confederates, forced into military service, and was killed in action near Atlanta, GA. Counted with John and Margaret in the 1870 census were Samuel, Martha, Celia, Mary (Mary TUDOR, see her record), John, and Rebecca. Between 1880 and 1890 John, Margaret, and his remaining family moved to Cosby (his pension papers dated July 1890 have his address as "Cosby, Cocke County". In May 1902, J.M. Sutton and Samuel Large, residents of Newport, attest that they had been his "close neighbors" since May 1901, so he apparently moved to Newport at that time. The 1900 census lists four CHILDREN for John and Margaret (Joseph M, 16; Dolly L, 14; David L, 7; and Ida M, 2) that I think should be GRANDCHILDREN, but I can't positively account for them as grandchildren either!

Martha was the daughter of William and Martha Yarberry and apparently had children before and after her divorce from John that were NOT John's but used the SHULTS name: Queenie (listed here), William (listed here), and George (not listed here; his only appearance is in the 1870 census). Martha later married Robert Ball and had one son, Columbus Ball. Oral history and tradition has it that Robert Ball raised the out-of-wedlock children of Martha's but the census records don't support this. Queenie and George were with Martha in the 1870 census as YARBERRY's and Queenie was counted with another family in 1880 as a SHULTS, but they were NEVER listed with Martha and Robert (I don't find William in the census until 1900 when he was a grown man with a family)[jrs].

1267. Martha C. SHULTS

She was still home through the 1880 census, then disappears.

1272. Mary (Shults) TUDOR

In the 1870 census she was listed as a TUDOR, and I'm sure must have been Margaret's child from her first marriage. She married as a TUDOR.

Thomas Lafayette MATTHEWS

It's not 100% sure the Mary shown here is the right person. Bess apparently had a second marriage to N.B. Lyle, 17 Dec 1909, in Sevier Co, TN.

1275. Sarah Ann SHULTS

She's listed in the 1880 Sevier Co census, probably wed J.L. Smith in 1892 in Cocke Co, TN.

1276. Meriah SHULTS

She appears in the 1880 census and there's no record of her after that??

1277. David R. SHULTS

I THINK this is the David who died in Apr 1905 and is buried in Union Cem in Newport.

Eli BRANAM

He was a Union veteran of the Civil War, serving from 1862-1865. His early death was probably a result of injuries and hardships suffered during the war. He had a child born in late 1870 or early 1871 (Eli Jr). His headstone has "Co E, 3rd Tenn Cav".

347. Martin H. SHULTS

Sarah's parents are Jeremiah and Nancy J. (Hollingsworth) McCarter. She's a sister of Hannah McCarter that wed James A. Shults.

1284. Jeremiah M. SHULTZ

He was known as "Jerry". He and Sarah had no children but she may have had a previous marriage to a ROLEN as she had a son, William "Willie" Rolen, born in 1898. Willie married a 'Dellie' and they were living with Jerry and Sarah in the 1920 census. Sarah's name on the marriage license was DAVIS!

349. George "Brooksie" SHULTS

Mary, his first wife, doesn't appear in the 1870 census with George, she MAY HAVE died in childbirth when their son James was born.

Ursilla's name is ORESILLA in some sources and PRISCILLA in others! Apparently despondent over marital problems with Ursilla, George committed suicide (shot himself). Family tradition says the shotgun he used was buried with him!

Ursilla WILLIAMS

Her name is 'Ursulla' on her headstone, it was 'Oresilla' in funeral home records. People who remembered her referred to her as 'Priscilla', and apparently a MULTITUDE of other names also. When she married George Shults her name on the marriage license was "R.C.". Her parents had a child named Rachel, listed in the census records, so she MAY HAVE BEEN "Rachel _____ ?"!

1295. David Harrison SHULTS

David killed his brother in a fight, supposedly spent the rest of his life in prison. He's PROBABLY the "David H. Shults" who appears in Atchley Funeral Home records in May 1968 and is buried in Shiloh Cem, Sevier County (no marker!).

1297. John R. SHULTS

John and Delia had no children, but she had two from an earlier marriage (see her record). He had a crippled leg from an accident with a horse while still a young man. He was known far and wide as "Johnny Crickett" (probably called that because of his small stature), a nickname he wasn't too fond of. Many, many people still remember him to this day, driving a horse and buggy around and about all over the Rocky Flats area.

1298. Noah L. SHULTS

Ellen's the sister of Nora that married Silas Shults. Noah and Ellen died, and are buried, in West Virginia. They had no children.

1299. Edward Pross SHULTS

An Army veteran of WW I, Cpl, Tenn Co A, 7 Inf. Never married. In some sources his first name is EDMOND. It's not sure if the middle name here is a real name or a nickname, it may have stood for PRESTON. He was generally called "Pross" or "Prosser".

1303. Victoria SHULTS

Erma (Shults) McAlister identified this child and gave us this story: Victoria was first buried in the old cemetery but her mother, Ursilla, grieved for her terribly and wanted her to be closer, to her, and to the house. Victoria's body was moved and re-buried in the field near George's house. So she was the first burial in what became the "New" Shults Cemetery at Rocky Flats.

350. David H. SHULTS

On their joint headstone his name is S-H-U-L-T-S, hers is S-H-U-L-T-Z! In his "Clans" book Don Reagan lists Robert and Bruce as children of David's that are buried in Fowler Cem. Robert and Bruce ARE buried in Fowler but aren't David's. He and Jane did have two children that died as infants, George and Liza, and are listed as such in Jane's obituary (courtesy of Bessie (Shults) Anderson). Bessie remembers as a child her grandmother showing her the little caps and other items of clothing of these two infants.

1309. Filmore Curtis SHULTS

He was killed as a teenager in a sawmill accident and is supposedly buried in Fowler Cem, but if so must be unmarked.

353. Melvin SHULTS

Hannah's the daughter of William Senter and Catherine Nancy (McCarter) Huskey. (She had a second marriage to Anderson T. Grooms, of Cocke Co, and had two daughters, Ola and Dicie).
