Joshua and Florence were considered among the pioneer families of Southeast Arkansas. They used a tutor, living in their home, to educate their children. Her husband, Jessie, is thought to be the son of Jessie Whitaker who was born in 1834 in Tennessee and whose wife was from Illinois. They had one other son, Harvey, born in 1857.

1879. Helen Ethel WHITAKER

Quoting from her obituary - "She and her brothers and sisters obtained their early education from a tutor who lived in the Whitaker home. She later attended the Old Friendhip Academy in Star City and then enrolled in college at Monticello." Willie was supposedly a half-sister to Betty Morse, Samuel's wife. She died young of a miscarriage. Between 1913 and 1915 Charlie, along with his five grown children and their families, homesteaded in Baca County, Colorado. Charlie only stayed there a short time for in 1916 he returned to his old home in Arkansas. His brother Milton had died by that time and his brother Samuel was a cotton buyer and carpenter. Samuel had bought Milton's land after his death and in 1917 bought Charlie's land also. This re-united the parcel of land that their father had divided between his three sons.
