Sam and his first wife moved to Gastonia, NC so he could find work in the textile mills. They had several children but only Violet survived, the wife died also. Samuel later had a long distance, postal romance by letter
with Martha, whom he HAD NEVER MET. She was the daughter of John and Lura Jane (Conard) Ramsey and a sister of Sarah who wed Alfred Parton. Very shortly, Sam wrote Martha, said he was coming to see her, and bringing a marriage license with him! He did, and they were married (this was when Violet was about seven) and returned to Gastonia to live.

She's a sister of Margaret who married Lewis Sutton and of Anna who married William Shults. She and Lewis moved with, or followed, her father to northern Georgia around 1914.

An Army veteran of WW I (Pvt, Tennessee 120 Inf, 30 Div). He was killed by his brother, David H, in a fight.

The first three children are by Nieta, and Thelma's by Martha. Amma's name is probably actually LETHCO.

Elbert is an uncle of the Elbert "Nip" Cantrell who married Bonnie Shults. He had two sons, Arthur and "Slim", from a previous marriage. The children shown here were all born on Greenbrier, Sevier County, and the family later moved to Gastonia, NC, and never returned.
