Cleburne Huston, in his book "Bold Legacy, the Story of the Houston/Huston Ancestors", cites Aimee Houston Eck's book "William Huston of Voluntown CT." In the book she states that William was the brother of John Houston, Gentleman, who arrived in Philadelphia in 1730 with his widowed mother, wife Margaret Cunningham, 4 sons and 2 daughters.

Aimee Houston Eck states two facts to support her connection of William Huston and John Houston: 1) Gen. Sam Houston was acquainted with William Huston and established the family relationship with his great grandfather, John. 2) In the Public Records Office in Belfast, Aimee Huston Ecks found genealogical notes concerning the "Houston family of County Antrim", which included a memo which noted that the mother of John Huston, Gentleman, had at least two sons, John and William.

Further, in my own research, I have found many mentions of Almanzon Huston (grandson of William Huston) and Gen. Sam Houston being known publicly as kin during the time they lived in the 1800's. They referred to each other as "cousin" and probably used the term in the broad sense of the time. My Huston family of the time claimed relationship to Gen. Sam's line.

Any thoughts on this connection of Huston/Houston back in Ireland?

Joe,

On your website at http://joepayne.org/houston.htm there are entries made by George & Noel Walker gwalker@gte.net on the family of Esther Houston. I am a descendant of Julia Doak and Adam Lowry. They have an entry of Adam being born in NC. I tried to email them, but the address is no longer valid. Would you happen to have a new address for them? Thank you.

(5) James3 HOUSTON, (John2 HOUSTON, Samuel1) was born Apr 18, 1715 at North Ireland, and on Jun 17, 1749 at Staunton, Augusta Co., Va, married (13) Agnes WILSON, daughter of Mr. WILSON, who was born about 1716. James died on Apr 18, 1820 at Houston'S Valley, Greene Co. and was buried at Houston'S Valley, Greene Co.. Agnes died in 1765 at Staunton, Augusta Co., Va.
Notes for James HOUSTON: THERE ARE MANY DISCREPENCIES FOR JAMES HOUSTON, Most Houston researchers seem to think he remained in Ireland where he died. I will leave all this information with that in mind. Joe Payne
The following is from Houston Valley, family of James Houston by Johnson.
James Houston's name appears in Augusta County, Virginia court records soon after its establishment December 9, 1745, and frequently thereafter through 1778. There he married Agnes Wilson, sister of George Wilson, June 17, 1749. James and Agnes Houston recorded acquiring land on Back Creek of Roanoke at "Turkey Botton", and in forks of James River through March 1765. Agnes is not found in records afterwards and probably deceased before James Houston began disposing of the above property in 1765 and became actively engaged in a real estate business with his brother-in-law George Wilson in and near Stauntion continuing through 1773.

James Houston listed in Eckenrodes Soldiers of Virginia, Augusta County, was in French and Indian Wars, was listed as Armorer Captain Blagg's Co., Col. Byrd's Command, and was discharged 1761 or 1764.

James Houston was in Greene Co., Tennessee, as early as 1778-1779. A James Houston of Washington Co, NC was in the Battle of Kings Mountain in 1778.

When Greene Co. was established by NC in 1783, the first court held at Greeneville in April of that year, James Houston was a memeberof the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions. On June 12, 1783, James Houston purchased from the State of NC 200 acres of land Grant Number 3375 on the north side of Nolachucky river.

Later that year North Carolina passed an act known as the "Land Grab Act," opening for settlement all of the land lying south of the French Broad and Big Pigeon rivers. Soon afterwards James Houston sold to a Mr. Posey his 200 acre grant mentioned above.

On November 19, 1788, James Houston purchased another grant Number 800 from the state of NC for 640 acres of land on south side of Nolachucky River. On this property at a spring-head of several large springs at the head of a large creek, now known as Brush Creek, he built a large two story log home and a small log church. the original Pine Springs Missionary Baptist Chruch, and gave his name to the Valley.

Originally this grant was in Greene County. In 1848 the line between Greene and Cocke Counties was so altered to include Pine Springs and a portion of the grant eastward into Cocke County.

James Houston was active in the establishment of the government of the self styled fourteenth state of the Union, the "Lost State of Franklin" 1785-1789. James Houston was appointed Sheriff by Gov. John Sevier and served rwo consecutive terms. He was also appointed Major of the State Militia. He was one of the organizing members of Flay Branch Church in Greene County in 1803 The name of thes Church was changed in 1885 to Mountain View Baptist Chruch. Jame Houston died in late spring of 1820.

Hi, Thanks for your response. I also have a copy of the material you sent. Unfortunately, it contains several errors.

First and foremost, William, the son of James who died in 1820 did not marry Hannah Sherrill. The William who married Hannah Sherrill moved to Roane County and remained there along with several of the Sherrills. William, the Rev. Patriot and the one who died in 1841 married Susannah Long. It took me quite a while to prove it, but I am now satisfied that there in no question. Aside from the fact that the signatures on the Rev. Pension App match the signature on the original Bond of the marriage with Susannah and also match the signature on a legislative petition submitted by William and his partners in the turnpike, there is the evidence provided by the will of William Cravens who states that he "raised William Houston." The executor of the will of this William Cravens was Evan Evans, the man who was the security on the marriage of Wm Houston and Hannah Sherrill. Wm and Hannah had a son Adam Sherrill Houston who is also in the records in Roane County. I first became suspicious when I noticed that the person who was the security on the bastardy bond for William Houston as the father of the illigetimate child of Susannah Long was Isaac Baker, brother-in-law of William. (He married Susannah a year later.) Then I noticed that all five of my William's children had daughters named Susan and none named Hannah. So after many months of collecting evidence and a trip to Greene Co. I think I can say that the proof is overwhelming.

As to James, I have just about concluded that he is not the one who married Agnes Wilson. First, James Houston who had a brother-in-law named George Wilson was still in Augusta County long after our James was in Greene Co. (according to a deposition he made in Augusta County dated 1803) Second, all of James Houston's children were married in the 1790s(except Hannah whose marriage date is unknown). James Houston would have been in his 70's, and about 50 years after his marriage. It seems a long time for his children to wait to marry. I could understand one or two, but all? Also, the James Houston who was on the court in Greene County in 1783 was the James Houston who moved to Blount County and served there as rep. in the Tennessee Assembly from that county. His Rev. Pension App gives the dates when he moved to Greene County, and when he moved to Blount Co. He is the one who was sheriff of Greene County.

Much of the information on James and William that you sent was sent to me by by Bernie Houston with whom I corresponded some years back. I know that we can compare notes for this extensively, but this just gives you an idea of the errors I have found so far.

Aloha Cousins
Just picked up on note from Joe Payne to Becky below. I also have a Houston/Montgomery connection (from family history) as follows:
John Houston left Ireland 1735-45 (b abt 1699) first in Penn. then to Virginia. He brought with him his mother, wife and all his children except James who died there.
Children: Robert, Isabella, Esther, John, Samuel, Mathew, all apparently born prior to arriving in Penn.
Esther Houston married John Montgomery abt 1750, and had a daughter, Ann Houston Montgomery b 1760, d 1829 Tn.
Ann H. Montgomery married John McCroskey b 1757. They had 10 children, Samuel McCroskey b 1782, m Sarah Tucker b 1808. This Samuel McCroskey is my g g grandfather.
If Joe or Becky or anyone else has any info on this family I am interested.

Aloha Cousins, Especially Becky, Trish,Fay, and anyone else interested:

For the record I would like to clarify the source of my information. I have inheirited a stack of papers from different older family members (now deceased), and have only just now begun to sort them out. They are all type written papers which date back to 1909 and end about 1963 or so. As I said in my last posting, I have no knowledge where this information came from. Some is possibly from the book you mentioned, Becky, and other pages come from Emma White's "Walker" book. Some information comes from interviews with older family members.

I do not claim that any of the information is 100% accurate, as I truly do not know the source of the bulk of the information. I am sharing this you in hopes that it may shed some light on our ancestors. In turn, please keep in mind that I am new at this, and too, have a lot to learn. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Most of the information I have is from the McCroskey family. I think that I have shared all the Houston genealogy that I have.
Note: The person that put together this information is my father's sister, Thelma Walker Hansen, and Ida McCroskey Walker is my grand mother.
Note: I am also enrolled on the Wigton Walker List, but have not been able to trace any Walker roots, stuck with my g grandfather, John Walker. Do you know how many John Walkers there are?
Aloha, George Walker

It's all very confusing, I'll give them that! I feel very fortunate to have Rev. Sam R. Houston's book as a jumping off place. And a family Bible back to mid-1800's. I have actually confirmed the lineage surrounding Gen. Sam to a great extent. That seems to be a chapter where Rev. Houston didn't miss much. Ok, we're all agreed on the first generation, John Houston m. Margaret McClung. (Ireland). 2nd Generation -- John Houston m. Margaret Cunningham (Ireland). They brought their 6 children (setting aside the discrepancy of James -- I can't account for him, but the rest of these check out elsewhere) whose names I mentioned earlier (3rd gen.) Robert, Isabella, Esther (who married the Montgomerys who seem to have married Wallaces?), John, Samuel, Matthew.

Look for Gen. Sam in Robert's family -- Robert m. Margaret (or possibly Mary Ann) Dunlap Davidson bef 1742, lived at "Timber Ridge" in Rockbridge Co., VA (tho it may have been Augusta county at that time. names changed) 4th gen --they had 6 children: John (no creativity in naming);Samuel; Elizabeth "Bettie"; Margaret; Esther "Nannie"; Mary 4th gen -- Samuel (above) became Maj. Samuel Houston, a Brigade Inspector, married Elizabeth Paxton ( I think I gave you the date before). I have no record of Elizabeth being married more than once. She was 16 when she married Maj. Samuel Houston. In addition to The Book (as I call it), I've checked other people's records and found a Paxton family book in the local LDS Family History Center where I got the names of Elizabeth's parents, siblings, birth dates, etc. (I live in Richmond, VA, a *big* help). 4th gen meanwhile, keep an eye on Mary, Major Samuel's aunt, who married John Letcher. She's well documented because she is buried in Lexington (I saw the grave) with a slew of relatives, including her grandson, Gov. John Letcher of VA. Ok. we got as far as Major Samuel Houston & Elizabeth Paxton they had 9 children: 5th gen -- One was General Sam Houston, soldier, lawyer, Congressman, Gov. of TN, Pres. of TX, etc. 5th gen also -- Mary Houston, sister of Gen. Sam, married 1st Gen. William Wallace, 2nd, Col. Matthew Wallace "Second marriage to nephew of first husband. Very unhappy one. He had a considerable family; she had no children of her own to care for, but considerable property. Her troubles proved too great to be borne. Her reason succumbed and she died in the insane asylum." Rev. S. R. Houston, 1881 No Wallaces from these two men can be called relatives of the Houstons.

However, my branch of the family includes some Wallaces. Go back to 3rd gen. -- John m Sarah Todd and had 9 children as follows: 4th gen -- James m Elizabeth Weir; John; Rev. Samuel (also 1776 soldier, 11th Infantry Militia) m. Mary (Elizabeth?) Hall, then m. Margaret Walker; William m. Margaret Williams; Robert m. ? Matthews then Mary Jane Neely; Matthew m. Martha "Patsy" Cloyd (my ancestors); Alice m. William Stephenson; Margaret m. Alexander McEwen; Esther m. Capt. Joel Wallace Acc. to Melanie Jean Barnett's information (sent to me 5/98): "In 1810, Joel and Esther and their children left TN for AL. They lived on a flat boat until they made their first crop. After they lived in a two story frame house, with a porch across the front, on their plantation at Sennica Springs. The yard was terraced in front by a stone wall two or three feet high. She is buried in Lilie's Graveyard behind the house. Her grave is shaded by an old oak and wild cherry trees."

So, how's that for a start. And, of course you're having trouble with Samuel. I have 25 Samuel Houstons in my database. And 34 named John.

I'd love more information about the family after they got to Tennessee. The Book stops at 1881, and Rev. Samuel Rutherford Houston died in 1887, no later additions, except that my g-g-aunts (who had visited with Gen. Sam when they were children) handwrote lots of stuff into it and the tradition has continued through the last hundred years.

I'm about to turn into a pumpkin. I have to work tomorrow -- leave the house at 7:30 a.m. Think I'd better quit for the night. I want to spend some time figuring out what to send you, and looking over what you sent me. I've been looking for information from TN for ages! I feel like I've dipped into all the Houston corners in Virginia, and I'm anxious to follow the pioneers westward!

Talk to you later cuz! (probably?) Becky

Esther "Hettie" Jane Gillespie Houston, dau. of Polly Gillespie & James Houston, married Samuel Cowan (not Andrew) on Jul 19,
1810, Blount Co., TN. I have that information from the Family Bible Records of James H. Cowan, found in the State Library of
VA. That is also what Rev. S. R. Houston says in his
book of the family (1882). She's called Jane in some records. (There were 3 other Hettie's besides these two.) They had 7
children. Meanwhile, Esther "Hettie" F. Houston married Andrew Cowan, Sep 26, 1816, Blount Co., according to the Blount Co.
marriage records and Rev. Houston and another book I found that I listed in my database as "Maxwell History." Somewhere or
other I have the complete biblio info on it.
This second Hettie was the dau. of Nancy Gillespie & Samuel Houston. Nancy Gillespie was the dau. of Isabella Houston &

And Maj.James Houston (m. to Polly Gillespie) was the son of Samuel Houston/Elizabeth McCroskey. Samuel & Isabella were
two of the 6 children of John Houston/Margaret Cunningham who came here in 1735 or so.
There is a Tenn-Gillespie expert out there who will probably see this and respond to you. If anyone has any information on the

Meanwhile, e-mail me and I'll send you what little I have on dates for these folks, and whatever else I can help with.

Hi. I got you request from rootsweb. I've been working on the Houstons for about 3 years. I'm fortunate to have started with the 1882 book by Rev. S. R. Houston. Here's what you asked for. I haven't visited your web site yet, but I'm on my way.
Rev. Samuel Houston (b. 1 jan 1758, d. 20 jan 1839) Rockbridge Co., VA, m. 7 jan 1795 (2nd) Margaret Walker (b. 20 jan 1771, d. 14 aug 1854)
Rev. Houston was my g-g-g-granduncle.
He was the father of Rev. Samuel Rutherford Houston, b. 12 mar 1806, d 18 jan 1887. It was Rev. S. R. Houston who wrote the book "Biographical Sketches of the Houston Family" (shortened version of the title). I have a copy of the book if you’d like other information from it.
Major Samuel Houston was first cousin to Rev. Samuel Houston. Someone may have an exact birth date, but it isn’t in the book or anywhere else that I can find. It would have been about 1745. He married Elizabeth Paxton 12 feb 1781, and he died 22 sep 1806. They had 9 children. Gen. Sam Houston (Gov. of TN) was #5, according to my records.
I have 1000s of these folks on Family Tree Maker. Let me know if we can share. I’m very much interested in updating my information on the Montgomery line, which I assume descended from Esther Houston (b 1724) and John Montgomery.

Paula,
According to the Rev. Sam'l Rutherford Houston's book BRIEF BIOGRAPHICAL
ACCOUNTS OF THE MANY MEMBERS OF THE HOUSTON FAMILY, Gen. Sam had a
brother James. He was a merchant for some time in Blount Co., TN. He
later settled in Nashville, TN, where he married and died. Davidson and
Blount Cos. might provide information about James' family. I am sorry I
do not have more information.

In May 1787, this was Hawkins, Co., NC.. it became Knox Co. in 1795. Matthew Russell's father, Andrew who was from Augusta county, VA, was visiting Matthew in TN when he died there. Notes for James MCCULLOCH:
Hi, Just wanted to share this with the McCulloch researchers I've spoken to, but have misplaced emails. So here goes: This comes from the book "Annals of Southwest Virginia, 1769-1800" by Sommers. Its in volume 2, page 1564:

"This is the stuff the men of King's Mountain were made of, and to further illustrate their spirit and determination, it may not be inappropriate to relate and incident that occurred in the life of Squire John McCulloch, who lived and died on the farm now owned by the heirs of A.R. Mallicote, Esq., and whose father fell by his side in that terrible battle. Many years ago the late General Francis Preston, who married the only child of General Campbell sent his son Thomas, then a lad of some fifteen years, to Squire McCulloch, to ask him to write out scuh incidents of this battle as might have made an impression on his mind. He very cheerfully complied, and as he handed the youth his written statement, the latter, like most boys of his age, loved to hear stories of march and battle, and asked him if he didn't feel frightened when he heard the bullets whistling around his head, and saw the gleam of the British bayonets as Ferguson's Regulars dashed down the mountain-side toward them. The old gentleman replied: "Well, Tom, I don't remember exactly how I felt, but if I wasn't frightened, I was mightily excited. I kept my bullets in my mouth so as to load quick, and when the fight was over there was one left, and I had chawed it til it was flat as a ninepence. I don't know whether it was fear or excitment-maybe a little of both."

I love the insights into the people! Take care...

Hugh Weir's will was witnessed by Samuel Weir, George Weir and Mathew HOUSTON. Mathew Houston also moved to Blount Co. John MONTGOMERY (Father of James who was Hugh's son in law) signed the inventory of Hugh's estate and later in Blount Co. signed the will of Joseph Weir. When the brothers in Blount Co. made their wills they proved their relationsship to each other and established their ties to the Rockbridge family. In his will, Samuel Weir , farmer, names his brothers James and Abrahm as exectors.

Notes for Samuel DOAK:
Rev. Samuel Doak was married twice. His first wife was Esther Houston Montgomery, daughter of John Montogmery and his wife Esther Houston. His second wife was a Margaretta Houston McEwen, widow of Alexander McEwen. Here we have an exampel of Tennessee Cousin Proclivity, in that, the first wife of Rev. Samuel Doak was a first cousin of Rev. Sam Houston, and the second wife was a sister of Rev. Samuel Houston. Also Rev. Samuel Houston was related to the famous Gen. Samuel Houston, as will later appear, and not far removed as a close relative of the Rev. Samuel Doak and his wives.

Rev. Doak was the first president of Washington College near Greenville, Tn, which was first cchartered under the name of Martin Academy. His son, Dr. John Whitfield Doak, succed him as President, in later years.

Samuel Doak was in the Battle of Kings Mountain, October 7, 1780.

Notes for Elizabeth WEIR:
In the book Weir / Wear Families by Jo Ann Weir Spare found a McClung Historical Collection the following Samuel Huston reference appears. We find in the Chalkley Cronnicles that there were several Weir families in Augusta Co., Va. On Aug 19, 1752 Robert Weir and John Cunningham, both of Augusta, are Grantees from Richard Cousart of 333 acres, Witnessed by Samuel Houstn, Thos. Eakin, Andrew Lockridge. Then on 17/18th of June 1763 Robert Weir and John Cunningham Grantors to Hugh Weir, of Augusta Co., for the same 333 acres as in 1752. This land was located in Bordens's Grant.

(37) William4 HOUSTON, Dr., (John3 HOUSTON, John2, Samuel1) was born in 1743, and married (82) Sarah. William died on May 9, 1911 at Rutherford Co., Tn and was buried at Whitworth Cem, Bedford Co., Tn.
Notes for William HOUSTON Dr.: The Old Whitworth - Houston Cemetery in Bedford Co., Tennessee. the old cemetery is some miles North of Shelbyville and West of Bell Buckle on the highway to Murfeesboro.

Dr. William Houston's grave shows that he died in 1811, and therefore attests to the extreme old age of the Whitworth-Houston burial place.

In memory of Dr. William Houston, who died May 9, 1811, in the 68th year of his age. (Other works are now illegible.) In memory of Mrs. Sarah Houston, the wife of Dr. William Houston. Who was this Dr. William Houston? Was he the first cousin of Maj. Sam Houston, who married Elizabeth Paxton, and had Gen. Sam Houston? John Houston, the uncle of Major Sam Houston (m. Sarah Todd) and had Rev. Sam Houston, born in 1758, who had a brother, a William Houston, merchat, who went North to buy goods and "never returned". Instead of "going north", did he come to Rutherford County and the Cumberland settlement to practice medicine, and have a wife named "Sarah"?

Notes for Joel WALLACE Capt.: Joel Wallace, Tennessee Indian Fighter, and Houston Kinsman, Tennessee Cousins by Ray.

The East Tennessee frontier, according to Ramsey's "Annals" page 565, was most inadequately protected, as appears from a list of the stations, (Forts) and strength of the frontier of Knox Co., Dec. 28, 1792. This is followed by nine stations including: Blacks Station with Joel Wallace, Ensign: number of men, Four.

In Haywood's Early Hisotry of Tennessee, page 302 appears this item:

On Wednesday the 3rd of July, 1793, Ensign Joel Wallace was fired upon by six Indians, at the head of Postol Creek, fifteen miles from Knoxville. One ball struck a large knife that was fastened to the belt of his shot-bag and shattered the handle to pices, some of which cut his breast. He escaped without receiving any further injury.

No authentic historical data pertaining to the ancestry of this Joel Wallace has been discovered, beyond purported records of the date of his birth and death. In one account that the writer has received it is stated that he was the son of a Thomas Wallace and was born March 15, 1771 and died December 15, 1855 in Alabama. The same account says that he was twice married, first to Esther Houston, of Rockbridge co., Va, (born 1776; died 1826 at Trinity, Alabama) and second to Rebecca Gulick Jones, who died April 3, 1846, also at Trinity, Alabama. I even have a photograph of Ester and Rebecca's gravestones and the inscrptions, but no authentic report on where Joel Walace, himself, died. Ray in "Tennessee Cousins".
