David Milum JOHNSON [Parents] 1 was born on 30 Oct 1860 in North Fork, West Virginia. He died on 4 Jul 1923 in Knoxville, Tennessee. David married 1 Frances Ann GREER about 1883 in Unknown.

The following information was given to  Charles E. Johnson and Joe D. Johnson on October 9-11, 1998 by Coy Johnson, the sole surviving child of David and Frances Johnson:

One of our grandfathers (which one is unclear) was kidnapped as a child by a "Johnston" in England and brought to America.  At some point he escaped and changed the family name to "Johnson".  Coy stated that this was told to him by his older brothers, probably Lloyd, John, or Jim.

· Prior to WW I David and Frances lived near Kyles Ford, TN.  David worked as a miller at the Livesey Mill (abt. before 1915) located about one mile south of Kyles Ford, TN.

· During WW I, the Johnson's moved to Lynch, KY where David worked as a carpenter and Frances was a seamstress.

· Lark worked for a coal company on the tipple (where coal is separated after being removed from the mines before it was loaded onto a train or truck).

· John's initial job with the coal company is unknown, but, eventually he worked for them as a machinist (abt. 1915-1919).

· After WW I the Johnson's moved to Spartanburg, SC where David worked as a carpenter and Lark worked in a cotton mill.  Frances stayed at home while Coy and George sold newspapers (abt. 1919).

· Between 1915 - 1919, David and Frances saved about $9,000 and moved back to Kyles Ford where they purchased a farm of approximately 250 acres (abt. 1920).  This farm was located about midway between Kyles Ford and Sneedville, TN on State Highway 33.  The farm included both bottom and hillside land.

· In 1923 David died at the age of 63.  Frances and the children living at home and were active in the Kyles Ford farm until it was sold in 1946.  Frances died in 1947 at the age of 79.

· During WW II Lark, George, and Coy were drafted.  Coy was sent to Ft. Oglethorpe, GA in 1942.  After several days, he was told to return home.  Coy suspects that the Hancock County Agricultural Agent called the draft board and informed them his two older brothers were drafted and someone was needed to run the farm.

· After WW II Lark returned to the family farm and worked it with Coy until it was sold in 1946.

· With the proceeds from the Kyles Ford Farm, Coy and Lark bought a farm on Ridgefield Road (now River Port Road) in Kingsport, TN.  In 1952, they sold the Ridgefield Road farm and purchased one on Harmony Road near Jonesborough, TN where Coy and his wife Burnelle still live today.
