This expert comes from "Sothern Historical Press, Inc." The Rev. S. Emett Lucas, Jr., P.O. Box 738, Easley, SC 29640, Copyright 1980 by Joy Edwards Davis.

Soon after the Rev. War was over people from the mountains of NC and Western Virginia began moving west through the mountain passes and down the rivers into the heavily forested land of the valley of the Clinch and the Powell rivers. Foreseeing such a westward movement Richard Henderson obtained a large grant of that "over mountain" land from the governor of NC, had it mapped and surveyed and divided into Lots of a thousand or more acres and sold these lots to prospective settlers who were bold enough to face the frontier and the Indians to settle this new land and endure the dangers and toil involved in such frontier settlements. Among these old settlers was John Carr, who obtained a lot in the Powell Valley, which streetched from the river to the top of Cumberland Mountain, and the gap in the mountain about the middle of the Grantline, north of that lot came to be called the Carr Gap. Just west of the Carr Gap, along the crest of the mountain was the Hopper Gap and just east of the Carr Gap was the Watson Gap. The gaps in the mountain still bear the names, usually family names of the earliest settlers, such as the Wilson Gap, the Childress Gap, and the Baptist Gap.

When John Carr came into the Powell Valley to claim his Henderson lot and to establish his homestead near the fott of the mountain just south of the Carr Gap, he brought with him his wife from a somewhat earlier settlement, called Springdale because it was near a big spring, about six miles south of Tazewell, maybe about that distance north of the Clinch river. Her name was Dorcas McCubbins.

Notes for Absalom ROBINSON: From an article in Hancock Co. and It's People by Alonzo Jason Tyler.

Old Mr. Abraham Robinson, a good man, a splendid citizen moved here with G. W. Margraves of whom I have written, his son-in-law from Tazewell, Tennessee. He has two sons, John and Henry. They married sisters, daughters of Mr. Bayler, who lived near the mouth of Mulberry Creek in Claiborne Co. Mr. robinson sold goods at Sneedville for the time he lived there about seven or eight years as I recall. When he died, his body was taken to Tazewell for burial. Henry, although younger than Jim, married first. He had two boys, Henry and another, whose name I have forgotten. They were living in Tazewell the last I heard of them. I think Isaac Campbell purchased the house. At any rate, this son-in-law, David Greene, lived there for quite a while after I leeft Sneedville. The house has been changed in appearance very much since I left there. Originally, it had the dining room and kitchen running down or facing, Main Street, from the main building instead of running back, as they were generally built in those days. It had a sidewalk in front running the full distance.

Abraham Robinson had a store in Sneedville. Mr. Margraves, who married a daughter of Robinson remained selling goods at that location. Mr Margraves was one of the kindest, best men that ever lived in Sneedville during My time. He had two children, Eva and Charles. Eva married Sam Eidsen of Hawkins County. They moved some where near Washington and died there. Mr. Margraves moved to Texas, then back to Rogersville and lived in the house where Billie Seals had lived on the ridge about midway between Kyles Ford and Rogersville in Hawkins County, Tennessee. Charles has lived and practicedlaw in Rogersville since that time.
