You may notice that the lineage of Mary Polly differs from mine. My lineage goes
(William, Matthew)
1. Mary "Polly"4 Wallace (William3, James2, William1)1 was born 29 Sep 1774
in Blount Co., TN, and died 18 Apr 1856 in Cane Hill, Washington Co., AR1.
She married Col. John McClellan1 01 Apr 1793 in Knox Co., TN2, son of William
McClellan and Barbara Walker. He was born 23 Dec 1768 in Washington Co., NC3,
and died 15 Nov 1842 in Boonsboro (Cane Hill), Washington Co., AR3.
Notes for Mary "Polly" Wallace:
A brother of Mary Wallace, Matthew, 1st married Mary Houston, sister of Sam
Houston. Sam and William McClellan, Sr. became great friends and
comrade-at-arms, serving in the War of 1812 together.
Notes for Col. John McClellan:
John McClellan was listed in the Sullivan Co., TN tax lists in 1796 next to
Abram McClellan. Sullivan Co., second oldest county in Tennessee, was created
out of the northern part of Washington Co. of North Carolina in 1779. It also
included the portion of NC western claim, lying north and west of the Holston
River, which had been considered a part of VA since 1771.
"Kings Mountain Men", by K.K. White notes that John McClellan was a
Lieutenant and served under Shelby at the Battle of Kings Mountain, and in
1790 was sent to Southwest Point Station to keep the Indians from molesting
the Cumberland Settlement. "Sevier Family History" states that Capt. John
McClellan commanded the garrison at Southwest Point, the junction of the
Clinch and Tennessee Rivers, in protecting the settlers and travelers from
the Indians. He also served in the War of 1812.
John's name appears on a muster and pay roll of Spies attached to a Brigade
of East TN. His pay for Aug. 25, 1813 to Jan. 1, 1814 was $55.27, which
included monthly pay, $8.00, and allowance to pay for use of his horse for 84
days, $33.60.
All his children were born in Knox Co., TN. He and his family went down the
Tennessee River in flat boats to Somerville, AL about 1820. Most of the
family later joined Charles McClellan, John's 3rd son, at Cane Hill, AR about
1833. William L. McClellan, John's brother, had arrived at Ft. Smith, AR in
the spring to 1826, and was probably responsible for Charles coming to that
area.
On May 5th, 1840, John was nominated as one of three candidates from AR as
presidential electors, in the Democratic party. The following appeared in an
article in "The Tornado", a weekly newspaper published at Little Rock, during
the political campaign of 1840. Dated Sept. 26, 1840, Number 13. "JOHN
McCLELLAN is an old bear hunter and land surveyor in Washington Co., where
the people know, esteem, and respect him. He has done his country service in
the Indian Wars, and Arkansas will do him the small honor to make him the
elector of the highest officer of the world. He, too, is a good Democrat, and
will go for Van Buren and Johnson."
Taken from "The McClellans and Allied Families", by Bobbie Jones McLane: "An
interesting old graveyard, just south of Cane Hill, is one of the county's
more romantic cemeteries. It is the last resting place of a number of persons
who were born in the 18th centure, most of them emtombed in massive vaults.
It is enclosed by an ornamental iron fence, and contains the dust of veterans
of the Mexican War and the War between the States. It is the last resting
place of pioneer preachers and school teachers."
Buried in the McClellan Cemetery are: The patriarch of the McClellan clan,
John McClellan (1768-1842). He and wife Mary (1774-1856) are buried under
fine old vaults, with engraved end-stones. The cemetery is no longer owned by
the McClellan descendants.

Notes for Elizabeth Idora McClellan:
Elizabeth, known as "Aunt Missie" to the family (she had no children), was
educated at Centenary College, Summerfield, AL, and was graduated in June
1864. After her marriage to Albert, he was very supportive of her writing
talents. He encouraged her to write the dialect sketches for her own and her
friends amusement. Her brother Walter McClellan sensed the fine hunor in her
writings and had her first sketch published in the "Alabama Reporter" of
Talladega. Soon after her first articles appeared in the form of letters she
began writing for the Atlanta Constitution, and at the suggestion of Joel
Chandler Harris (Uncle Remus) she abandoned the letter style and wrote
character sketches, keeping the now popular nom-de-plume of "Betsy Hamilton."
The "Betsy Hamilton" letters might not have been the very beginning of
Cracker dialect writing, but was an advance over anything previously done. At
that time, Joel Chamdler Harris was just beginning to make his reputation and
the lesser known dialect writers had not even appeared in print. Other
editors soon saw the rich humor and local color in her writing, and "Harpers
Weekly" soon published a series of her best sketches.
Thru the efforts of Joel Chandler Harris, Mrs. Moore became acquainted with
Henry Grady, then editor of the Atlanta Constitution. He helped her develop
her talent for impersonation, then helped make it possible for her to begin
her dramatic apearances with a New York Chautauqua performance. She appeared
two seasons there, and frequently at Southern Assemblies and Chautauquas. For
40 years she was a prime favorite with churches, schools, clubs, and other
civic organizations.

Notes for Evan White McClellan:
From "Early Settlers of Cane Hill", by Ellen Earle Richardson -- "When the
Truesdell's young daughter, Sarah Jane, was a little less than 15 years old
she and young Mr. Kirby made plans for an elopement, knowing the father would
not consent to his daughter marrying so young. Col. John McClellan's son,
White, and some other young friends were to help the young couple get away.
The young men were to come down the road to the place about where the mill
dam is now, and while some stayed with the horses, others would go toward the
house, near which they were to find the young lady wearing a white dress and
standing under a certain apple tree.
"It so happened that a certain young clerk in the Truesdell store learned of
the plan and thought it was not the right thing to do. Moreover, he had a
liking for the girl himself, so he told the father of the plans and the
father made plans of his own. He locked the girl in her room, and when the
proper time came, wrapped a sheet around himself and went to stand under the
apple tree. The young men came, left some with the horses at the creek, then
the perspective bride groom Kirby and a couple of others crossed and went
toward the house ... and the apple tree. As they approached, one man noticed
that the figure standing there was rather tall ... they took a closer look,
and turned and ran.
"There was no elopement, and to guard against the danger of another attempt,
Mr. Truesdell took the family on a visit to Indiana and left the girl with
her grandmother for a while. She did get married though, after she was more
grownup, and this time the family offered no objections ... and the
bridegroom was White McClellan, one of the friends who had come to the apple
tree to help Sarah Jane run away with another man."
Notes for Sarah Jane Truesdell:
Sarah was educated in Cane Hill. Her father was a man of wealth, but he spent
it helping people and the town. He put up a steam mill. The post office was
called "Steam Mill" for a while, then was "Boonesboro", named for a relative
of Daniel Boone who lived there, then Major Earle named it Cane Hill. Mr.
