The Huddleston family is taken from A SKETCH OF THE HISTORY OF JOHN HUDDLESTON, SR. AND FAMILY by Mary Hansard's "Old Time Tazewell". Charlotte Huddleston, oldest daughter, was a fine lady. I have heard my mother speak of her in the hightest terms. I recollect to have seen her many years ago, when she came on a visit to see her aged mother. Her husband was Fielding Hurst, a son of Elijah Hurst, a well-known old citizen of Grainger Co. the entire family of John Huddleston left, except two daughters, Lucinda and Sallie. They remained in this part of the county. The others moved to West Tennessee, and perhaps all of them settled in McNairy Co. I hear that they have been very prosperous, and some of them have accumulated fortunes. John Huddleston, their father, died when I was quite young. I recollect attending his funeral with my parents. He died of yellow jaundice. His widow raised their family all to be grown on said farm. She spent her last few years with Mrs. Hurst, her oldes daughter, in McNairy Co., West Tennessee. Fielding Jackson Hurst, born in 1810 in Claiborne Co., Tn, came to McNairy Co., about 1830 working as a surveyor. He appears to have been the first Hurst to locate in this new territory.

David Hodge was a horse buyer for the southern market. They lived a short distance from Head of Barren Church. He had gone from home on a trading expedition when the sad news reached her that he had died very suddenly some distance from home. His remains were brought home and buried at Head of Barren Church.

This is a contridiction because of the first entry I had I listed Nancy as the daughter of James Johnson, which would make more sense with her age being what it is but Mary Hansard says that the oldest daughter of Isaac Johnson, son of James Johnson was married to Harmon Hurst. She gave no name and could well have been mistaken.
This comes from the Reflections article and also the Claiborne Co. 1880 census record where Harmon is living with James Stanifer, son-in-law.
Harmons Hurst, oldest son of Aaron Hurst, owned and lived on a farm a few miles west of Springdale, Tennessee.

Andy Hughes was once a sheriff in Claiborne Co. Elizabeth, fourth daughter of Harmon Hurst, was married August 18, 1873 to Andy C. Hughs of Virginia, ex-sheriff. They own and live in Tazewell in the brick house knownas the old homestead of Hugh Graham Sr. (Speedwell Manor). They have one son and two daughters.

Mom remembers a Kenneth Hughes born about 1905 that married a friend of hers, Thelma Hurst, now in a nursing home in Morristown that lived in the Old Hugh Graham house, aka, Speedwell Manor, that set back of the Shell Hotel in Tazewell and now sets in South Knoxville. Moved by Dr. Rogers.

This is from Mary Hansard's Old Time Tazewell under A Sketch of Felte Fultz and Family.

Mr. Gainum McBee is a grandson of Rev. Samuel McBee, a preacher of the Anti-Baptist Church, and early settler of this county, who raised a large family of sons and only one daugher. I cannot call to mind all of their sons. I only recollect the names of William, Pleasant, and Samuel Jr. William McBee was twice married. I don't know his first wife's maiden name. She died when I was very young. His second wife was Mrs. Barbary Van Bibber, a widow lady. They owned and lived on a farm adjoining Joseph White in Powell Valley, and raised a family in said valley. This is all I recollect of the sons of Reb. Samuel McBee. His only daughter married, ??? Hurst, a son of Rev. Hiram Hurst. They own and live on a farm in Lonesome Valley about six miles north of Tazewell.

William McBEE is thought to be the father of Nathan McBEE, the father of Olive McBEE WILLIAMS, wife of Andrew Franklin WILLIAMS. William may also be a brother to Isaac McBEE who married Elizabeth GRUBB in Claiborne County, TN. She was a daughter of John GRUBB Per the 1850 census, both William and Isaac were born in TN. Isaac was 49, William 51. William had a 16 year-old daughter named Elizabeth and a 6 year-old son named Isaac.

Nathan B. McBEE is reported to have married the first time about 1850; his wife's age in the 1850 census is given as 16. He married the second time in 1854, Knox Co., KY to Rosannah J. BLACK. This couple is documented as parents of a female child born in Laurel Co., KY, 07 AUG 1856. The name is not legible. Ollie McBEE, wife of A. Frank WILLIAMS was born in 1859 in Laurel Co., KY. The Speedwell (TN) history reports that Nathan purchased land in Knox Co., KY; then is present in Claiborne Co., TN in 1853-54 and 1857. By 1870 Nathan was in Virginia City, NV with no wife or children. In 1880 he is enumerated in Custer Twp. (Lemhi) ID. The last report given in the Speedwell history is the Nathan McBEE, age 71 appears in Heppner (Marion) Oregon in 1900. There is no mention of family. Rosannah "Rhoda", his second wife, and the couple's son, Marshall, are enumerated in the home of Frank and Ollie WILLIAMS in 1880 in LAUREL Co., ky.

Marriage record for "Ollie" McBEE and Frank WILLIAMS in Laurel Co., 27 SEP 1877 contains a handwritten note authorizing the marriage, signed by, Rhoda McBEE ("her mark"). 1880 census for Laurel Co. lists "Rhoda MAGBY" age 40 and her son, Marshall, age 12, in the home of Frank and Ollie. Rhoda is reported to be a widow. References 1 & 2 show "Rhoda McBEE/MAGBY" as the mother of Ollie McBEE WILLIAMS and J. Marshall McBEE. Research in Claiborne Co., TN documents a marriage between Nathan B. "MAGBY" and Rosannah J. BLACK, then refers to Rosannah as "Rhoda", the mother of Marshall. Laurel Co. microfilm gives a female child born to N.B.McBEE and Rosannah BLACK on 07 AUG 1856, but the name is illegible. Apparently Nathan left his family between 1859 and 1870 and traveled west alone. He appeared in Oregon on the 1900 census. Rhoda and her son, Marshall, were enumerated in her daughter, Ollie WILLIAMS', home in 1880 in Laurel Co. Rhoda is categorized as "widow". Compiler suspects that Rhoda and/or her family was trying to her by reporting her status as widowed; apparently, Nathan died in OREGON. Compiler has not located the burial place of Rhoda, as of 1995, but has assumed that she died in Laurel Co. between 1880 and 1890. It is possible that Rhoda moved to Knox Co. after her son's marriage there in 1891. (1890 U.S. Census was entirely destroyed by fire)

The marriage took place at "Caty" or "Coty" McBEE's with William HALE and John WILLIAMS as witnesses.(Surety; John MAGEE) 1880 census for Laurel Co. shows "Rhona MAGBY", mother-in-law, age 40, widowed and "Marshall MAGBY", brother-in-law, age 12 enumerated in Andrew F. and Ollie WILLIAMS household. On the 1900 census, Ollie reported that she had given birth to 8 children in 22 years of marriage; only six were still living at the time of the census. The youngest child, Walter, Ollie's ninth, was not born until after the census. Marriage record for Frank and Ollie contains a handwritten note to authorize "Olly E. McBEE" and Frank WILLIAMS to be granted a license signed by Rhoda's "X". John MAGEE, surety. The marriage took place at "Caty" or "Coty" McBEE's and witnesses were William HALE and John WILLIAMS (brother of Frank). 1880 census shows "Frank's" mother-in-law and 12 year old brother-in-law enumerated in his household. 1900 census shows Frank's widowed mother in the home. She was 79 as of June 1900. There was also a boarder counted in the WILLIAM's home in 1900; his name was given as James TAYLOR, 70 years old, b. KY. He is classified as "Idiot" under occupation. It is not known if this boarder was a relative; however, under early provisions for public welfare. local families were often paid by the state to provide room and board for "afflicted" or handicapped people. Laurel Co. Deed Book 27, p.496 records a deed from A.F. and Ollie WILLIAMS to J.W.(maybe J.H...John Henry??) O'DELL, 09 FEB 1899. This would have been shortly after John Henry O'DELL and his second wife, Mary JOHNSON, were married.

" This deed of conveyance, made and entered....day of February 1889 between A.F. WILLIAMS and Olivia WILLIAMS his wife, Laurel county Kentucky party of the first part, and J.H. I am a decendant of Daniel and Mary Ann McBee Hurst. Their daughter Missouri married Daniel Wesley Green. They were my ggrandparents. their daughter Manervia married John M Shaw. They were my gggrandparents. Have you done any research on this family of Hurst? Who were the other siblings of Daniel and Mary Ann, and why can't I find any information on them? I read in Mary Hansard's book that Daniel owned and lived on a farm in Lonesome Valley of Claiborne County, but can't find any record of him owning land. A brother, Nathan Hurst is mentioned in Missouri's petition for a pension, but can't find anything about him either. Daniel was the son of Hiram and grandson of Thomas Hurst. I would be so grateful for any information on this family.
