John has been claimed to be a great-grandson of Henry Payne (d. 1692/3) of St. Mary's, and Mary Assiter and thus a grand-nephew of Thomas Payne (d. bef. 1731) of St. Mary's, who married Tecla Thompson. Gary Stewart Payne

1. John PAYNE was born 14 FEB 1769 in prob. St. Marys Co. Md., and died 24 MAR 1846 in Knottsville, Daviess Co., Ky. bur. St. Lawrence Cem.. He married Dorothy DRURY 20 OCT 1794 in St. Marys Co. Md., daughter of Ignatius DRURY and Anastasia FRENCH. She was born ABT 1770 in St Marys County, MD, and died ABT 1853 in Knottsville, Daviess County, KY.

John is commonly referred to as John H. by genealogists, H. being Henry. In some of the old records he was called, Jackie. Dorothy was called, Dolly, in the Drury family history. Their marriage license was issued in St. Mary's County, Maryland on October 20, 1794. They were living in Prince George County at the dates of the baptisms of their sons, John Lewis in 1799, Ignatius in 1801 and Charles in 1809, at Holy Trinity Church in Georgetown, D.C. In 1811 they moved to Kentucky where they show ed up on the tax records of Nelson County owning land on Cox and Froman Creeks. By 1826 John had 347 acres of land, tax records showing his taxable worth as $6,075, a considerable amount for that time. He did own a few slaves as did many others at that time. They were listed by Ben We bb in his CENTENARY OF CATHOLICITY IN KENTUCKY among the families who worshipped at St. Michael's Church in Fairfield. Some of these names could be found later at St. Lawrence Church in Daviess County: Miles, Aud, Knott, Drury, Higdon etc.

On March 15, 1830, John and Dorothy purchased 625 acres of land on Pup Creek. Later they bought another 516.6 acres, also on Pup Creek. By 183 9, 788 acres had been sold, mostly to heirs. After John's death, Dorothy lived, along with a "servant", with John Lewis and his family. Until last year there was a well, on property owned by descendants, that was said to have been dug by John and his sons. John's stone at St. Lawrence is a crudely etched creek stone which is just about unreadable. The re is no stone for Dorothy but it is presumed that she too is buried there.

Ky., daughter of Clement CLARK and ELEANOR. She was born ABT 1797 in prob Md.., and died BET 1835 AND 1836 in Daviess Co., Ky. He married Elizabeth Isabella Lambert CLAYTON ABT 1836 in prob. Daviess Co., Ky.

William P. Payne and Margaret Clark were married in Nelson County, Kentucky, August 26, 1818. William had come to Nelson County from Maryland with his parents in 1811. Margaret was a daughter of Clement and Eleanor (maiden name unknown) Clark. Their marriage bonds states she was over 21 years of age. Peggy, as she was referred to in her father's will, had some interesting connections. Her brother, Richard Clark, married Clementia Elder, a first cousin of Catherine Spalding who would later become Mother Catherine Spalding of Nazareth. This young cousin lived in their home and Richard and Clementia acted as her foster parents for a time.

Clement Clark's will was probated in Nelson county, April 4, 1823 and names his children, Richard, Peggy Payne, Betsy McBride, Nancy Walker and Ally Clark, his heirs.

The Nelson county tax rolls show William paying taxes there for the last time in 1825. Margaret died after 1834 and William was married to Elizabeth Isabella Lambert Clayton by 1837. William died May 13, 1855 and is buried in St. Lawrence Cemetery.

John Lewis, or Lewis as he was referred to in a number of documents, was born in Prince George Co., Md., May 31, 1799. He was baptized at Holy Trinity Church in Georgetown, D.C. on June 30. (They must have lived near by to have had the babe baptized that young). His grandmother, Anastasia French Drury, was proxy godmother in place of Elizabeth Drury, most likely his aunt who was called Betsy. Lewis was about twelve years old when h is parents and brothers moved to Nelson County, Kentucky. They settled in the Fairfield community and were members of St. Michael Church there .

Lewis married Martha Medcalf on April 21, 1820 in Nelson County. (da te on bond) Martha was a daughter of Charles Medcalf and Elizabeth Jupin, Marylanders who had settled nearby the Payne’s. John Lewis' brother, Dennis, married Martha's sister, Mary. Sons, James Hilary and Charles Louis, from his marriage to Mary R. Spencer, married nieces of the Medcalf sisters, Martha Ann and Susanna Philpot, daughters of Henry Philpot and Harriet Medcalf.

Martha Medcalf Payne died about the time of the birth of their fourth child, Martha Ann, in 1827. Lewis remained single until 1836 when he and Mary Rosalie Spencer were married by Father Elliott, July 29, 1836, in Nelson County. Mary R. was from Bullitt County, was an orphan, the names of her parents not known. She was said to have attended school at Nazareth and was a convert to Catholicism. By November 9, 1936 they were living in Daviess County and selling jointly owned property in Nelson County.

According to the HISTORY OF DAVIESS COUNTY John Lewis became one of the mo st successful farmers in the county and at the time of his death he own ed 1200 acres of land.

3. Ignatius PAYNE (John PAYNE1) was born 22 AUG 1801 in Prince George Co. Md.., and died 28 APR 1851 in Daviess County, Ky. He married Christina HAGAN 4 OCT 1821 in Nelson Co. Ky. by Fr. O'Brien. She was born ABT 1800 in Maryland., and died in prob. Daviess Co., Ky.

Ignatius was baptized August 22, 1801 at Holy Trinity Church in Georgtown, D.C. His godmother was his aunt, Elizabeth Drury, his mother's sister. Ignatius and Christina Hagan, daughter of Elizabeth Hagan, widowed, we re married in Nelson County, Ky., October 4, 1821 by Father O'Brien. They were in Daviess County, Ky. by 1830 when their daughter, Ann Louisa, w as baptized at St. Lawrence.

Ignatius life ended in a horrific tragedy. This is a version told to me by his great great granddaughter, Sister Mildred Barr OSU:

There was a gentlemen's agreement between Ignatius Payne and William and George Turnbull concerning the use of water on Turnbull property for the Payne cattle. For some reason the Turnbull’s fenced off the access. Ignatius took down the fence so his cattle could get to the water. The Turnbull’s came out with clubs and butcher knives and hacked to death, Ignatius and his son, George who was 18 years old. They cut up the other sons, John A., James and Ignatius (ages 21, 16, and 13) and left them for dead. They survived but Sister Mildred said an old picture of one of the sons shows the scars of the tragedy on his face. Another source, History of Daviess County, stated that the Turnbull women came out and fought as vicious ly as the men. They too were indicted for the murder of the Payne’s. The Payne farm was about 6 miles east of Owensboro, on the Pleasant Valley Road and in 1884 was described as the John A. Payne farm.

There was so much anger at the Turnbull’s that their trial was moved to Ohio County where they were let go and were never heard from again. The language in the depositions is quite strong in describing the evil deed of t he Turnbull’s.
