Subject: Rogers ancestors Date: Thu, 23 Mar 2000 7:34:00 PM Eastern Standard Time From: jjauch@tsgus.com (Jacqulyn Jauch) To: JPayne5744@aol.com Mr. Payne-- I have started reseraching my Rogers ancestors. I received data printouts that my cousin researched for over 20 years on our Rogers family. I have begun my research by using the unreliable resource of the WEB. I am a Library Science student and trained in database retrival and understand that we cannot rely on the WEB completely. I found your WEB site and became very interested in your Rogers ancestors. I have data showing that Robert Rogers II, son of Robert Rogers and Frances Russell, married Hannah Tipton [same info you have]. You have data showing that my Robert Rogers II is the son of John Rogers of Claiborne Co. TN. Do you know about the two Robert Rogers? I have also been in touch with another Rogers researcher who has some of the same info I have, that is the origins ofthe Rogers clan in America: Samuel Rogers and Mary Whiting parents of Robert I. I would like to know if you would share the Rogers info you have with us. My data also shows that Robert Rogers and Hannah Tipton had two sons: Robert III and Stephen Rogers. Stephen Rogers is my direct ancestor and he married Rebecca Tipton and they with his brother Robert migrated to Texas in the early 1830's.I have documents to prove this migration. But Elizabeth and I have some of the same info and of course some that confuses the issue. Her data shows that the North Carlina Rogers clan claims that Robert Rogers IImarried a Jane Turner. We both also have Hugh Rogers married to Nancy Thornton. The Rogers seem to be very mixed up. If you can help us with the two Roberts we would appreciate it. Thank you-- Jacquie in CA

You seem to know more about Claiborne County research than anyone I have come across . Have you ever run across the William Rogers married Patsy Cross in 1805 in Grainger co. They lived in Claiborne county on Lone mountain on Bald Creek. I have old letters written in 1801 by William taking a case for his mother in law Rebecca Cross Gibbins. He ran into trouble in 1820 and had to sell most of his land to Hugh Graham. We have a letter from Margaret Graham wife of William Graham. stating that now is all secure with the last sale. She states "all your friends and neighbors on bald creek send you their regards. (Patsy had left William and moved to Cumberland to be with her mother.) We have several personal letter that William wrote to Patsy asking her to come back . She never did. In one letter from William to Patsy he says that he is going into business with Mr. Chockly . Harper and Lebow are also mentioned in letters. I have been to Tazwell and Elaine Creech has tried to help me. She feels there were 3 William Rogers there at one time.I also have spoken several times with Mary Parkey, I subscribe to Reflections and belong to the Society. I f you have any advice on how to search William's father or family I would so appreciate hearing from you. My family in Russel Springs Ky had all the letters and gave me copies. THey all believe he was part Cherokee. I am beginning to wonder. He did say in one letter that if Patsy did not come back he would go to the Cherokee Nation. He could not live in Ky. as he would not be allowed to buy land there. Thanks for reading this long note and if you could find the time for a reply I would be so greatful. Subj: William W. ROGERS/ROGERS and Martha Patsey CROSS Date: 3/12/2002 7:36:52 PM From: morocco2@lv.ffni.com (Theresa) To: JPayne5744@aol.com ( this was just sent to me below that someone else sent this to them, info I guess they had put back because it wasn't there line? ) In 1820 Martha Patsy left William Rogers in Tazewell, Tn, and moved to Albany, KY., where she had relatives. William wrote to her several times to get her to come back to him. She evidently lived with her relatives near Albany, KY. for a few years and must have purchased property and moved to Russell County soon after leaving her husband because there are receipts whereby she paid county levy and revenue tax as early as 1824. Where the family lived is about five miles south of Jamestown, KY., near Old Sewellton Post Office. During the Civil War while her son James and two grandsons were in the Union Army, America was seriously ill with T. B. Martha Patsey helped take care of her until her death May 10, 1864. Martha Patsy died December 14, 1869 at the age of 89. William W. Rogers was born circa 1776. This writer has no knowledge regarding his parents or what may have happened to him after 1829. He married Martha Patsy Cross May 3, 1805 in Grainger County, TN. Martha Patsy was born in VA. to Edward Cross and Rebecca Gibbons. William and Martha had six children. 1. Hiram Rogers who was deceased by 1849 had two children--Hiram Franklin and Martha. 2. Wiley Rogers married Alvira Kerns--no children. 3. Mary Polly married and later divorced Jordan Twidwell and married Mr. Andrews. 4. Elizabeth Rogers married Wesley Huffacre. 5. Elizabeth Rebecca Rogers married William Murray. 6. James Rogers married his first wife America Coffey in 1843; his second wife was Elizabeth Kimbler.

I can't for the life of me find my ROGERS line. :( They say Nancy remarried after the death of her 2nd husband Joseph EAST but don't know who??? And I don't know the name of her first husband (______)ROGERS/RODGERS. There was land info I found dated 1828 for Clinton/Cumberland Co,KY. David Rogers, who was the first Sheriff elected by the County Court in Claiborne Co. in 1801, but who resigned his right to the office in favor of John Hunt, Sr., who was elected to serve in his place, was born in Wythe Co., Va about the year 1777, and lived to the age of 94 years. David Rogers was possibly the son of that certain John Rogers, who at a session of the Washington Co. Court on the 28th day of August 1778 was mentioned in the following order: Ordered, that a commission issue to John Colter and Isaac Sheley, Esq. to take the deposition of Ruth Morris, Lydia Cross, Mary Whyte and John Crockett on behalf of John Rodgers, defandant, the State Plaintiff. The John Crockett mentioned in this order, was the father of David Crockett.

The book is FULL of information about Tennessee. I highly
recommend it. But as Mr. Helstrom reminds us it is not entirely

"FIRST SETTLERS ON CLINCH AND IN POWELL'S VALLEY, CLAIBORNE COUNTY
"The Act establishing CLAIBORNE COUNTY (from parts of HAWKINS & GRAINGER) was passed October 29, 1801.
"The first settlements in Claiborne County were mde in POWELL'S VALLEY and along Clinch RIVER. Two Hundred Thousand acres of the lands included in the boundaries had been granted to HENDERSON & CO. under the terms of the settlement made with them.
"The County was named for WILLIAM CHARLES COLE CLAIBORNE, one of the first Judges of the Superior Court and the first member of the U.S. Congress from Tennessee.
"When the County was laid off, according to its boundaries, it included the lands theretofore obtained by purchase or otherwise by persons who had obtained such lands when they were a part of Hawkins County, of which they were also original settlers. It also included original settlers of the then GRAINGER COUNTY, who likewise had obtained their lands taken up when it was part of HAWKINS COUNTY. These facts explain why it is that some of the first settlers of CLAIBORNE COUNTY had also been first settlers of HAWKINS AND GRAINGER counties.
"Following is a list of the first magistrates of CLAIBORNE COUNTY, who were present at the house of JOHN OWENS in December, 1801, when the court of pleas and quarter sessions was organized:
"1. ISAAC LANE 2. JOSEPH WEBSTER 3. WILLIAM TRENT' 4. JAMES CHISHOLM 5. ABRAHAM LENHAM 6. JOHN WALLING 7. MATTHEW SIMS 8. JOHN VAN BIBBER 9. WILLIAM ROGERS 10. GEORGE READ 11. C. NEWPORT 12. JOSEPH NATIONS 13. JOHN CASEY 14. JAMES RENFRO
"The oath of office was administered to those persons gy ANDREW EVANS and JOSEPH COBBS, of GRAINGER COUNTY. The officers of the new County selected at this meeting were:
"ISAAC LANE, Chairman WALTER EVANS, Clerk NATHANIEL AUSTIN, Ranger JOSEPH NATIONS, Coroner EZEKIEL CRAFT, Register LUKE BOWYER, Attorney General *DAVID ROGERS, Sheriff
"*DAVID ROGERS failed to make bond, and JOHN HUNT, SR. was therupon elected to fill the vacancy thus created in the office of Sheriff.
"The next term of the court was held at the house of JOHN HUNT, who lived on the site of TAZEWELL. A town to be called TAZEWELL was selected as the county seat, and it was laid off and estblished on JOHN HUNT"S land.
"LUKE BOWYER came tothe settlement very early. He had been one of the first settlers of the WATAUGA SETTLEMENT.
"The first grand jury selected for the county were: JOHN HUNT, WILLIAM GRISSON, NATHANIEL AUSTIN, SAMUEL TATE, JACOB DOBBINS, WILLIAM BOWMAN, WILLIAM STROUD, JOHN WEBSTER, NIMROD DODSON, PETER NEAL, THOMAS GIBBONS, PETER HUFFAKER, WILLIAM RUSH, THOMAS JEFFERS, HEZEKIAH JORDAN, ELISHA WALLING** ,ARCHIBALD McKINNEY, GEORGE SNUFFER.
The third meeting of the court was held at the house of ELISHA WALLING. Commissioners to erect a jail in 1819 were:
JOSIAH C. RAMSEY ROBERT CROCKETT JOHN EVANS DAVID ROGERS WILLIAM RENFRO REUBEN ROGERS"

DAVID ROGERS, who was the first Sheriff elected by teh County Court in Claiborne County in 1801, but who resigned his right to the office in favor of JOHN HUNT, SR>< who was elected to serve in his place, was born in WYTHE COUNTY, Virginia (or what is now Wythe County) about the year 1777, and lived to the age of 94 years.
DAVID ROGERS was possibly the son of that certain JOHN ROGERS, who at session of the WASHINGTON COUNTY COURT on the 28th day AUGUST 1778 (American Historical Magazine, Vol 5, page 356) was mentioned in the following order:
Ordered, that a commission issue to JOHN COULTER and ISAAC SHELBY, Esq. to take the deposition of RUTH MORRIS, LYDIA CROSS, MARY TYE, and JOHN CROCKETT on behalf of JOHN RODGERS, defendant, the State Plaintiff.
The JOHN CROCKETT mentioned in this order, was the father of DAVID CROCKETT, the "hero of the Alamo, who was born several years after this order was passed.
Information about this ROGERS family is very meager. It
is mere tradition that DAVID ROGERS was born in WYTHE County, Virginia,
and that he was born in 1777. He may have been born earlier, and he may
have been born in Washington County, or somewhere on the Watauga, since
his father was undoubtedly there in 1778. It looks like, considering all
the records available that JOHN ROGERS had children:
1. DAVID ROGERS 9 b. 1777-9) married MARY ELIZABETH LEWIS,
b. GUILFORD CO>< NC, 1781 & died Claiborne Co., 1880 in her 100th
year.
2. REUBEN ROGERS, of Claiborne Co., about the same time.
3. HUGH ROGERS married NANCY THORNTON of GREENE COUNTY,
Oct. 1, 1788.
4. JAMES ROGERS married RHODA ALEXANDER, 1793, Washington
Co.
5. JOHN ROGERS married ELIZABETH ASHER, Washington Co.,
1788.
6. ROBERT ROGERS m. HANNAH TIPTON, Washington Co., 1793.
"DAVID ROGERS AND JESSE ROGERS SONS OF DAVID OF CLAIBORNE
"DAVID ROGERS in Claiborne County in 1801, and who married
MARY ELIZABETH LEWIS (dau of AARON LEWIS of Watauga) had these children:
1. DAVID ROGERS
2. JOSEPHINE ROGERS
3. JOHN P. ROGERS
4. SILAS I. ROGERS
5. HORACE M. ROGERS
6. SNEED ROGERS
7. W. R. ROGERS
8. MARY ROGERS
9. SARAH ROGERS
10. HUGH ROGERS
11. REUBEN C. ROGERS
"JESSEE ROGERS (b. 1811) and his wife MARGARET WILSON, were the parents of 1. JESSE L. ROGERS, an Attorney.
"JESSE L. ROGERS was born in Powell's Valley, Claiborne
County, April 9th, 1855. Studied at Tazewell Academy & law at Lebanon,
Tennessee. Represented Claiborne and Hancock Counties in the Legislature.

Joe,
I found this on your site and
I think I can shed some light on it. On page 227 of Bonnie Page's
book Speedwell though 200 years you can find the picture of the home of
Minerva Rogers Ausmus Kivette. Aunt Nerve as she is referred to in
my family was first married to Dr. John Franklin Ausmus (Jan 4, 1839-1864).
He died on Lookout Mountain at Chattanooga during the Civil War.
Aunt Nerve later married John Kivette or Harvey J. Kivette in your information.
Aunt Nerve and Capt. John Ausmus were the parents of 1. Emily, 2. William
Harrison, 3. John Franklin Ausmus (later known as Dr. Blue John).
I do not know if Emily's first name was Sarah or not, but since it was
listed that way in the census it may have been Sarah Emily Ausmus.
She married LaFayette Stiner. You can also find information about
the Ausmus family of John and Minerva in Old Speedwell families, revised,
on page 34.
Perhaps you are already aware
of this connection because I am sure you did the above work some time ago.
However, I thought I would pass it along.
Best Regards,
Billie Hall
