I thought the some of the family would find the following of interest. Although
the Rose and Robinson family are descendants of the same ancestors down through
the years there was what could be called "Bad Blood" because of a family
squabble that took place between brothers. I am unaware of any anamosity
at the present time between any of the family and if so will be glad to remove
the following correspondence. I thought that many attending the upcoming
Great Payne Family Reunion might enjoy reading some correspondence between
my Uncle L.G. Payne, Jr. and even more interesting correspondence between
Shane Rose, son of Jack Rose, well known and liked lawyer of the area. Please
contact me with your feelings. Joe

Joe, both Helen and I remember the location of the filling station [Rose
Gulf Service Station] as it was in 1935. Of course, it was not as clean and
colorful looking as the picture you show. At that time, Jimmy Greever, a
nephew of Dr. Carr's wife [actually son-in-law of James Carter Carr], operating
the station and Rufus Noah worked with Jimmy Greever there. We never knew
that Carson Rose had anything to do with it. Do you remember Caron Rose's
age, etc.? You will probably remember he married Irene Atkins. In a fight
back in early 20's, he and Clay Jennings had in Lone Mt., Carson shot and
killed Clay. Later in Tazewell, Carson was killed by someone at the moment
I can't remember who...maybe a Robinson or ???(Uncle was wrong here. As you
can see Carson died after a long illness) Sorry, my memory is getting worse
daily, but I keep trying. I believe it may have been a Shultz. Glad to know
the Court House register was Estes...Ross...Thanks

Lon Yoakum was born in 1892 in Claiborne Co., Tennessee, USA, and married
Jossie Schultz who was born about 1895 in Claiborne Co. This is the sister
to Ms. Lizzie Schultz Robinson who married Sterling Robinson. They had two
son[s] Schultz Robinson and Haydad Robinson. My mother, Edith Payne, Robert
Payne's wife, and my Grandmother Birdie Phillips were sitting in a car on
the street of Tazewell. They heard shots and got out of the car to see the
aftermath of a shooting. Caywood Rose had killed Schultz Robinson. Later
Shultz's brother Haydad killed Caywood Rose.
That was a great story during my early life. Caywood was a special friend
of ours in our early years. Marrying Salley. He and Claude Overton, who was
a son of Judge Overton, who lived there in Tazewell next door to the old
Tazewell Payne Motor Company. Claude dated Helen Payne...he was quite a drinker...but
back to Caywood. Helen roomed with Salley and Caywood when she first came
to Tazewell in 1934 to be a caseworked to the poor and lived at the old Shell
Hotel, where many of the TVA workers also lived. I had heard that Caywood
was killed but couldn't remember the details. As I heard, he died while he
was working in the garage on a tire and whoever it was came in and shot him.
Hadad was about Mildred's age and very good looking man. I think Mildred
may have had a few dates with him in the late 1919 periods. She graduated
from high [school] I believe in about 1918 or -19. All the Robinson men where
handsome as I understand it. If you look at the record you can see that Clay
Jennings was born in late 1880's probably,(Robert Clay Jennings was born
Dec. 16, 1897 and was married to Virginia Williams. He was the son of Frank
Jennings and Eliza M. Payne. He had two children Liza Jennings and Clay Jennings)
and he was killed by Carson in some sort [of] argument they had at that time.
I don't know the details, but I was a youngster and can remember when it
happened in early 1920's, I believe, much earlier than Caywood's death. Mattie
and Eva where his sisters, who later went to live with our uncle Ben Livesay.
Ben was married to Donna, the oldest daughters of Aunt Eliza, hence the close
relationship with the Livesay’s and Aunt Eliza's family. Homer was a twin
son of Aunt Eliza. His twin died in childbirth I believe. Homer
and Tip Payne were about the same age. After Eva married a Goodman
and moved to Knoxville, Homer went to live with them and worked in a shoe
shop in downtown Knoxville, probably owned by Goodman, where he was a leather
salesman. More later about the tragedies in family. Hope all is well with
you. Had note from Pat which I will try to forward later tonight or tomorrow.
I have some legal copywork to do later this evening. More later.
Love Uncle Fate

Hey Joe
I love your website. I am very interested in sharing information with you
on
some of the Rose History, however, I will only have a fraction of what
it
looks like you have. I too have always been told the stories regarding
the
Rose/Robinson feud. Cawood was my grandfather's brother. We still have
the gun
that was used to kill Shultz Robinson. My grandfather was Lawrence
and my
father was Robert Jackson Rose(Jack). I have the stories my dad has
told and
some Newspaper articles. Now I am curious aout Carson and J.W. Rose and my
relation to them, but mainly info about the feud. Can you steer me in the
right
direction? I have spent some time doing some research online and trying
to get
copies of newspaper articles from the Claiborne Progress, but the microfilm
printer there has been broken for years. I live in Knoxville, my mom
still
lives on the faamily property in Shawanee - part of the property is
in VA.
next to Pappy's on highway 58. I also noticed you have done research
on the
Buis' , my half brother is William Scott Buis, who lives on the Buis family
poperty down Cedar Fork in Tazewell.
Please help me in any way you can
It would be most appreciated.

Shane,
Well, I knew your dad slightly. Jack used to have a TR-7 I think.
Is that right? I had two TR-4's and a GT-6, Triumph sports cars by
the way. Jack got his worked on at Kenny and Scotty Boatman's just
off Pleasant Ridge Rd. in Knoxville and we used to talk cars.
I think most of what I have has been passed down through my parents and of
course Pauline Robinson Payne Perkins. Now some of the names you may
not be familiar with. You should think about coming up to Lone Mountain
on the weekend of June 16th to what is being called a Payne family reunion.
There are going to be descendants of Robinson, Rose, Jennings and Payne at
the Reunion. It is just off the big curve in Lone Mountain, I am sure
you know the one.
Most of what I know is on my site. Now I will share just something
between family.
OK, now I am a big fan of old guns. What caliber and make is it?
Thanks for contacting me. Do you mind if I put your email on my site?
I will work on your relationship as I have always been curious how your dad
and I think your uncle, Dr. Carroll "Pokey" Rose.

Thanks for the reply
Jack had a triumph spitfire he used to piddle with. David Rose Wall
(Cawood"s (Woody) son and Lawrence's grandson) is my first cousin and we
talk regularly, but have never heard of the affair angle from him, of course
I heard it was self defense after Shultz pulled a gun or shot first in a
bar or something.
The gun is a Colt .38 semi automatic, black plastic handle and black
steel, maybe 6".
You can use my e-mail.
Did cawood and a Payne own the gas station together? and if so, is that the
same as the Rose Gulf station there where Cedar Fork comes in?
I look forward to hearing back from you and possibly meeting you at
the reunion

I forgot to mention Pokey Rose. He is 1st or 2nd cousins with my father
I believe
Shane Rose
Shane,
I thought that Dr. Carroll Rose and your father were brothers. I was
sorry to learn that Jack had died. He was buried I think in Virginia,
is that right? I am only on the computer rarely now since my wife has
complained I spend too much time at genealogy. I went ahead and posted
your first email, hope you don't mind.

OK, I see I am lost already. Cawood Rose who married Sally Payne and
who shot Shultz Robinson had a brother Lawrence who had a son Cawood (Woody)
I did not know that was who Woody was. Now Jack Rose, the lawyer was
your father and was a son of Lawrence. I always thought he was called
"Woody". So you are planning to be at the reunion. The David
Rose who is the Payne connection that is a part of the reunion group is a
son of Cawood and Sally Payne Rose. He has a sister Betsy Rose Taylor.
Do you know them? David Rose Wall I have never met. Did he lose
the Rose name for some reason. Maybe we should just wait till June.
I will try and be at the Saturday night barbacue. Look forward to meeting
you.

Joe
thanks for your thoughts on my father ,he died in August of 2005, he is buried
up at our family cemetary on the VA side of the property off of highway 58
just before Pappy's. Jack had 2 brothers and a sister. His brothers were
Larry and Woody(Cawood). Woody died in 1972(i think) at the age of 30 I believe.
Larry died in the late 80's or early 90's. His sister Mary is still alive
and lives next door to my mother there in Shawanee
Shane Rose
I don't know the David Rose you are talking about, nor Betsy. David Rose
Wall's mother remarried after Woody was killed in a car wreck and her new
husband adopted David and therefore David Rose Wall. He is my age - 37yrs
old. I have a twin brother Spade Rose, a half brother and sister - Rob Rose
and Debbie Rose, and another half brother William Scott Buis(Scott). Obviously
both of my parents were married before they married each other.
Hopefully I can make it to the reuinion and bring Spade and David. please
stay in touch and I will do the same
Shane Rose
Shane,
That would be great. I know that you would be welcome and some of the
stories that we all could share would be welcome. My aunt married Horton
Robinson which I think was a first cousin to Shultz Robinson, I will have
to check my database to make sure. There is a large group of them coming
from N.C. Horton Robinson died way back in the 1940's and my Aunt didn't
remarry until the in the 1980's to her childhood boyfriend here in Tazewell.
One particular about the reunion. There is a coroporation that the
descendants of Byrd Payne, father of Sally who married Cawood have formed.
They are trying to raise some money to keep up their old house and from what
I understand they are charging for some of the events. There will be
a meet and greet at the clubhouse on Woodlake Golf Course along with the
barbacue (pig roast) that will be catered and a bluegrass band. All
food and beverage will be included in the cost of $40.00. Some have
backed off coming because of the "business" part of this but I can understand
why they have to do this.
My cell# is 423-231-3676 so I suggest a little closer to the June 16th date
you give me a call.
One other strange thing is I found in the 1910 Claiborne census that the
three Robinson boys were living with Benjamin Shultz, father of Robert Sterling
Robinson's wife Lizzie Shultz but in the 1920 Claiborne County census record
where the three Robinson brothers, Shutlz, Bob and Ben (Heydad) were living
with John W. Rose (J.W.) father of J.W. who killed Joe Tyler Duncan's father.
Something happened between those three boys parents that caused all of them
to go bad. Bob Robinson was killed in a mine strike.
I will have to take the time to get your information in my database also.
Thanks for staying in touch and I really did like your father although I
never got to know him that well.
