Dear Sir:
I trust you have, before this, received safely the body of Nannie, your daughter.
I found on my return home, Wednesday enening, that it would be impossible to send by press as directed by your telegram, to Hellenwood, as it could not leave here until Thursday morning at 6:30 o'clock not connect with Con. Southern R. R. train; could not leave Chattanooga in all probability until Friday morning as the night train on that road does not stop at Hellenwood so we were in formal. I decided it was best to ship by Buckeye - on Knox. & Ohio Road & thence by wagon. Also we could not ship by Express.

!This is the Authors Grandfather, who he knew well, as he didn't die until 1959. Several things I remember about my Granddad Phillips were his visits to my parents house in Tazewell, where he slept in the guest bedroom in the four poster handmade cherry bed, made by my Uncle Doug Wilson. Granddad was a very loving person and usually enjoyed a good joke. He was a fisherman in his earilier years and liked going with my father and uncle. He chewed tobacco and would keep a spit cup by the bed. He enjoyed a good cigar on occasion and glad that my brother George remembered to send him some, Havana, if I remember correctly. I remember an accident he had once while staying with us and attempting to return to Scott County on a bad winter day. He came back to the house with a cut on his head. I remember his trips to Texas with my father, where he owned a farm, 360 acres. He had bought the farm along with Roberta Carr, Park A. Carr's wife sometime maybe in the early 1900's. Mrs. Carr and her husband had owned the farm since the late 1800's. It was located near Plainview, Texas. Just before selling the farm, that my Granddad had bought along with my father from Mrs. Carr, they had drilled for and struck a water well and had two crops of cotton. They had drilled two wells, the first hit a pocket of natural gas, which they capped and moved on to another section where the water was struck. They got in the neighborhood of $80,000.00 for the farm and retained about 1/8th the minieral rights. I have done extensive research on the ownership of these rights and whether any drillings have been done. There are two articles I wrote for the Claiborne County Historical Society regarding my Granddad's exploits while an Agent with the ATF, Prohibition Division of the Treasury Department. I believe the Winter 1992 Edition and the Spring 1993. Many articles from the Lousville Courier and papers in Memphis and Chicago are among the items in my possession. Among his other accomplishments were his first job with the Cumberland Chronical, 1890's, his his serving in the Spanish American War, the Phillipians and in China during the Boxer Rebellion. He returned and married my Grandmother, had the first power and light company in Claiborne Co., the first motion picture theater, was County Road Commissioner was Captain of the local Volunteer malitia, was a U.S. Marshall, Pinkerton Agent and lastly Deputy Chief Adminstrator over Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee for the U. S. Treasury Department's Prohibition Service.
The Commercial Hotel that was owned and operated by Abner Hansard a cabinet maker, the fifth house was the only building facing Main Street on the next block. It was Graham's lumber house. Since that time it has been turned around and is now used as a store house by Joe Phillips. The sixth house, Buchanan Brothers large store building occupied the southwest corner of the third block. The tenth house stood on the site of the Shell Hotel and was a large brick store owned by J. L. Evans and Brother.
