Hi,
I
saw your web page and was interested in the genealogy of Gen. James White. Do
you happen to know anything about his sister Sarah White? I was wondering if
she was the same Sarah White who married Joseph Wilson and lived in Sumner
County, TN. Sarah would be my 6th great grandmother through her daughter Sarah
Almira Wilson. I had read in a history of Sumner County about the attack on
Zigler Fort and it said that Sarah White Wilson's brother was General White of
East Tennessee.
Thank
you for your help and your great web page.
Take
care

Notes for James WHITE Gen:
James White was a soldier, public offical, Founder of Knoxville, born
in Rowan Co., NC now part of Iredell Co. NC. His parents were Moses and Mary
White. During the American Revolution, James White was a Captain of the N.C.
Militia, he was entitled for his military services to a grant of land. In that
year he with Robert Love, Francis A. Ramsey, Alexander McMillan and others made
a tour of exploration to select desirable tracts of land in East Tennessee.
They traveled as far down the Holston (Now the Tennessee) river as the present
Lenoir City. The next year Capt. White moved from N.C. to Fort Chiswell, Va,
whre he remained about one year. In 1785, he helped organize the State of
Franklin, & was member of the General Assembly and its Constitutional
Convention that met at Greenville. That same year he removed with his family to
what is now Knox County and settled on the North side of the French Broad, near
the present Riverdale, the same place that Alexander Campbell, who established
Campbell's Station later, had lived on in 1790. The next year, 1786, Capt.
White and some other families settled on White's Creek, built a cabin and
cleared lands. 1789 he was representative from Hawkins Co. in the Legislature
of N.C. and a member of the convention that ratified the Constitution of the
U.S. In 1790 he was appointed by Wm. Blount Major of militia and Justice of the

Following from
http://www.fpcknox.org/history.htm
Knoxville's First Presbyterian Church, the city's first
church, was organized in 1792 and is still located on its original site.
James White, Knoxville's founder and a devout Presbyterian, came from North Carolina to the Fork of the River, where the Holston and French Broad Rivers meet to form the Tennessee River. He later moved downriver and settled near First Creek. He built a fort and a mill and planted his garden -- for turnips in the fall and corn in the spring. When he asked his son-in-law, Charles McClung, to lay out a town, part of White's instructions were "to reserve my turnip patch for a church and a burying ground."
Until recently, those words by
White were the only deed to the original land used by the church. Additional
properties were registered as they were acquired, but not until the legal
incorporation of our church (as required by the 1983 reunion of the country's
two largest Presbyterian groups) was that original portion listed with the Knox
County Register of Deeds.
The first pastor of Knoxville's
first church was the Rev. Samuel Czar Carrick, who had come from Virginia.
Arriving at Fork of the River, he helped organize Lebanon-in-the-Fork
Presbyterian Church. After Knoxville was founded, Rev. Carrick came downriver
and, in 1792, started the pioneer town's first church. Carrick later served as
president of Blount College, which is now the University of Tennessee. The will of Rev.
