Thomas LIVESAY, (Thomas LIVESAY, Thomas) was born about 1752 in
Tockholes, Lancashire County, England and married Margaret WALTON who was born
about 1750. Thomas died in 1823 in Greenbrier Co., West Virginia, USA.
The first of nine children to leave the family in Blackwater. Records of
Greenbrier Co. W.V. show that Thomas, Jr. acting on his own or for his
father, had 360 acres on Culberson's Creek near Williamsburg, WV,
surveyed in 1784. He is shown in Bedford Co. Va in 1779, in 1786
Henry Co. VA court records describe Thomas as not a resident of this
state. In 1787 land totaling 192 acres sruveyed for Thomas Livesay
in the same area where the 1784 survey was made.

married Mary CAMPBELL, daughter of James CAMPBELL. John died on
Aug 31, 1840 in Greenbrier Co., West Virginia, USA.
His wife's father James Campbell's trips into the Kanawha Valley of present
day West Virginia probably blazed the way for the Livesay Family's
settlement of Greenbrier County.
He was a farmer in the Blue Sulphur Springs area of Greenbrier Co.
John and Mary had 12 children.
2 Thomas LIVESAY was born in 1776 in Bedford Co., Virginia, USA, and on
Jul 10, 1807 in Gallipolis, Gallia Co., Ohio, USA, married Winifred
NISEWANGER. Winifred was the daughter of Charles BUCK.
She had first married John NISEWANGER Jr, who died Feb 1806 in
Gallia Co, OH, and they had a son.
Thomas's estate inventory was 27 Nov 1807. (not death date).

Winefred BUCK NISEWANGER LIVESAY then married Walter NEWMAN of
Mason Co VA on 5 Jun 1808 in Gallia Co., OH. It is not known where she died.

This is information on Fountain Livesay as found in "The Livesays of
Greenbrier Co. WVA" .
"Fountain Livesay, son of Thomas and Margaret Livesay, married Maary
[Polly]Handley in 1809, and in 1833, the couple and their family moved to
the vicinity of Napoleon in Lafayette Co. Missouri.
This family was quite prominent in western Missouri affairs. The town of
Livasy, Missouri was named in honor of William Wallace Livesay, one of the
sons of Fountain and Mary [Handley] Livesay.
Descendents live in Independence/Kansas City area today. "
" From their homes in Greenbrier Co. West Virginia, the descendants of
Thomas and Margaret Livesay moved out across West Va. In near Nicholas County,
we have the town of Leivasy, West Va. founded by Valentine Leivasy, a descendent of
Greenbrier Livesays. Recently a small town of Levisay which was on Hominy Creek,
branch of the Gauley River was discovered. They also settled in Ohio, in Jackson Co.
And an 1833 wagon train journey of Fountain Livesay to Lafayete Co. Missouri.
From these early westward and southwestward journeys came moves to Tx, OK, Iowa and
the far west as this branch of the family with roots in Lancashire in England made
and continues to make its contributions to the building of this nation. "

A letter to the Greenbrier Independent's Marcellus Zimmerman descibes his grandfather
Thomas as emigrating to this Country from England and settling in Franklin Co. VA and
says his father came to the mountains of WV some years after the Revolutionary War.

FLETCHER who was born about 1760. Elizabeth died in Gallipolise, Gallia Co., Ohio,

George Washington Livesay attended the 24th Session of the University of Virginia where he
studied classes in Chemistry, Surgery, Medicine and Anatomy. According to his obituary he
went to Columbia, NY to attend medical school, then arrived in Gallipolis, Ohio in 1848. The
following entries are found in the book by Evans and Wood; 02 Nov 1854 Gallipolis Journal
marriage; George W. Livesay, MD of Gallipolis to Elizabeth Lang of Fredonia, NY in Fredonia,
NY by Rev. Israel Foote on October 4, 1854 p. 64 Dr. Livesay had a house built in Gallipolis,
Ohio that is called "Riverby", a Federal style brick home listed on the National Register of
Historic Places and is open to the public.

Twelve children were born to this union. After Elizabeth Died in 1833 Carter married Rachel
Phillips on May 3, 1835. One child was born to this marriage. His third wife was Mabel Perkens
who he married on November 26, 1836 after Rachels death in March of the same year. From the

Margaret Livesay appears in the records of the Franklin Co. Court of March 1787 as a witness
for Livesay and Carter against Thomas Arthur. Other later transactions involving the sale and
pruchase of land include Margaret and Abrahm Griffith and she is listed as one of the nine
children of Thomas Livesay in one such transaction.

He was a farmer, gunsmith, and county official in Grayson County. He remained there until
1834 when, with their youngest son , Joseph, he and his wife joined the George Livesay
family in Hawkins Co. TN. Virginia Pension Abstracts of the Revolution, 1812 and Indian
Wars by Lucy McGhee, Washington D. C. 1959, Volume 5. James Livesay drafted
18 Sept. 1814 at Grayson Co. Va. courthouse; discharged there 1 Feb 1815.
Letter from Samuel Frost dated 6 June 1881 of Lee Co. Va. States he is around 40 and
is son of Letha Livesay, widow of James Livesay and that Livesay's first wife Nellie
died 31 years ago and was buried on James's farm now in Hancock Co., Tenn., then in
Hawkins Co. After marriage, he died over 20 years ago and was buried by his first wife.
Letha and her family stayed on the farm until moving to Lee Co. Va. During the war
and has resided with her son.
James Livesay served in Capt. T. Daltons's Co. and received B. L. Wt. # 38359 for 160
acres in 1866. He lived in Hancock Co. 1855. widow lived 1856, and she lived at Hunter's
Gap in Va. in Lee Co. in 1880.
First wife was Nellie Caldwell. Second wife was Leathy Goins. She married him 19 Feb.
1850 in Hancock Co. Tenn. The soldier died 11 April 1857 in Hancock Co. Tn.
He also married on Feb 19, 1850 in Hancock Co., Tn, Leathy GOINS who was born about
1790 in Va. Leathy died on Mar 20, 1907 in Lee Co., Va.
2 Elizabeth LIVESAY was born in 1784 in Henry Co., Virginia, USA, and about 1801 in
Grayson Co., Va, married Joseph BAKER who was born about 1780 in Henry Co., Va.
Elizabeth died about 1857 in Hancock Co., Tennessee, USA.
Elizabeth and Joseph were among the heirs of George Livesay signing a deed conveying
property in Hawkins County formerly woned by her father, indicating that they made the trip
to Hawkins with the main body of the family in 1819. She was dead when the estate of her
father was settled in 1857.

5 Margaret LIVESAY was born in 1791 in Wythe Co., Virginia, USA, and married Peter
TESTERMAN, son of Thomas TESTERMAN and Mary Jane ANDERSON, who was born
about 1790 in Grayson Co., Tn. Margaret died in Hancock Co., Tennessee, USA.
6 Thomas LIVESAY was born in 1793 in Wythe Co., Virginia, USA. Thomas died in 1874 in
Putnam Co., Tennessee, USA.
He remainied in VA until the late 1830's when he is found in court records in teh Kyles
Ford area of Hawkins County. In 1850 he moved to Overton Co. Tennessee. He was a verteran
of the War of 1812 and died and is buried in Putnam Co., TN. Many of his descendants
moved to Missouri and are found today in Missouri, Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona, and New Mexico.
7 George LIVESAY was born in 1794 in Grayson Co., Virginia, USA, and before Jan 1825 in
Hancock Co., Tn, married Mary Polly DAUGHERTY, daughter of Joseph DAUGHERTY and
Mary Molly ROBINSON, who was born about 1800. George died in 1861 in Hancock Co., TN, USA.
The 1830 and 1840 census of Hawkins Co. show 8 children. 4 boys and 4 girls. They
appear in the 1850 and 1860 census of Hancock Co. and Mary (Polly) Livesay is found in
the 1870 census but George is not listed.
8 Mary LIVESAY was born in 1796 in Grayson Co., Virginia, USA.
Probably died at an early age since no record has been found of her.
9 Edmond LIVESAY was born in 1799 in Grayson Co., Virginia, USA.
He is on the census of the 1860 and 1870 Lee County, Virginia but is gone from both
Hancock County and Lee Co. records by 1880. They had 10 children.

Hancock Co., Tennessee, USA.
Peter married Susannah Testerman in about 1810 either in Grayson County VA or Ashe County,
NC. Peter and Susannah left Grayson County with George and Nancy Livesay about 1816 and
moved to Lee County, VA and then to the Kyles Ford area of Hawkins County. TN. Peter and
James shared the responsibility of leadership of the family after the fathers death.

I'm not sure what our connection is, but I will assume that we're cousins of some sort.
I saw reference to your web page in some material that was forwarded to me by Nancy Resch,
(another cousin), but couldn't find your web address. I would like to compare your research
to some of mine. How can I find you on the web?
I am particularly interested in any information you may have on Mariah Surgener, who was
the wife of Milan Davis Livesay and my great-grandmother. I know her father was Stephen
Samuel Surgener, but havn't been able to take the line any farther back than that on the
Surgener side. Mariah's mother was Elizabeth Livesay (born 1832, died 1916)...her line
was Andrew/James/George/Thomas/Thomas.

You've got my great grandmother Julia Ann Livesay married to another
woman (Mary Lula Testerman) on page 29300 of your Livesay ged.com
(also on the Testerman file). She would not be amused. She was married
to William T. Testerman (son of James Testerman (#80 in the Testerman
file), one of 4 Testerman brothers who married 4 Livesay sisters in this
family). Her brother Milum Livesay (1862- c. 1899) is missing on your
list, and was married to Mary Lula Testerman (dau of Wm Penn Testerman).
Also, while I'm here,another great grandmother, Mariah Surgener (page
4567 on the Livesay gedcom) was born 24 Mar 1853 (per Lee County birth
register), died 26 Aug 1942 in Hancock Co., TN (per her death
certificate), and was married July 1, 1869 to Milum Davis Livesay, his
first wife Margaret "Monnie" McNeil having died in 1867. There were two
other children born to Mariah & Milum who did not survive to adulthood:
Julia (1878-1880) & Elizabeth (1880).
I have more info on ancestry of all these: all 4 of my father's
grandparents (Mariah Surgener, Milum D. Livesay, Julia Livesay & W T
Testerman were of Livesay descent, and all except Mariah were also
descendents of Thomas Testerman). Let me know if you want that info.

Joseph LIVESAY, (George LIVESAY, Thomas, Thomas) was born May 19, 1802 in Grayson
Co., Virginia, USA, and about 1820 in Hawkins Co., Tennessee, USA, married Lavinia
HURLEY who was born Sep 18, 1803 in Virginia, USA. Joseph died on Aug 15, 1862 in
Blackwater Ck., Hancock Co., Tennessee, USA and was buried in Natty Branch, Hancock Co.,
Tennessee, USA. Lavinia died on Jun 17, 1894 in Treadway, Hancock Co., Tennessee, USA and
was buried in Robert Harvey F., Hancock Co., Tennessee, USA.
Joseph was a teenager when his parents left Grayson County, VA, around 1816 and moved to Lee
County, VA and then to Hawkins Co. TN. He along with Edmond Livesay, had the largest
families among the East Tenn. Livesays.
Joseph was a Union sympathizer in the Civil War. A story was told by one of his descendants,
(Edna Livesay Ramsey, Sneedville, Tennessee, that she had heard from her father) that a band of
Confederate soldiers came by and arrested several men in the community including Joseph.
They tied them and dragged them intending to hang them. Susanna (Mrs. Peter Livesay) a
sister-in-law to Joseph, intervened and begged for Joseph's life, saying "He is a good
man and does not deserve that kind of treatment." They released him but hanged the others.
He received injuries at that time that resulted in his death a short time later, August 15,
1962.
There is a large, very old cemetery on Natty Branch, a few miles from the home place,
many graves are only marked with field stones. Some people in that area say that Joseph
was buried there.

Carter LIVESAY, (Joseph LIVESAY, George, Thomas, Thomas) was born in 1823 in Hawkins
Co., Tennessee, USA, and about 1845 in Hancock Co., Tn, married Sarah BYRD who was
born about 1825 in Hawkins Co., Tn.
Carter was an impulsive, high tempered man and because of this he had trouble living
peacefully with his family and neighbors.
In his Civil War records, the late Ralph Mason found the following story: "Carter Livesay
of Kyles Ford, Hancock County, Tennessee, was Known as an uncompromising Union
man at the beginning of the war between the states. In 1861 some southern
soldiers came through the county arresting Union men and taking their guns.
When they approached Carter's House he fired on them, shooting the horse from under
one of the soldiers. Thereafter he fled to the nearby woods to hide. The soldiers
came on to the house and arrested his father, Joseph, and took him off to prison.
Carter's father died shortly after his release from prison. Carter and others
remained in hiding afraid for their lives. When Capt. Rose came into the county,
recruiting men for the southern forces, Carter and others arranged a meeting with
him and as a result were given safe conduct out of the county into Kentucky.
There evidently was not a clear meeting of minds as Capt. Rose, in his disposition
after the War, believed that he had gained new recruits, but Carter said he thought outherwise.
Later, when they were in Kentucky, rifles and uniforms were issued to them but Carter refused
to wear the uniform and hid the gun under a ledge of rock. He never took the oath of
allegiance and later when the soldiers were engaged in a skirmish at Boston, Ky., he got
away and joined the Federal troops at French Lick, Ky., and stayed with them
until his discharge. The records futher show that Newton (his brother) did not go
with him, but his brother Joe did. Carter served in Company F of 2nd Tennessee Regiment.
He enlisted Feb. 15, 1862 and was discharged Feb. 24, 1863 (disability).
The papers show that he married at Blackwater, Tenn. Nov. 10, 1885 to Ellen Mullins and
that he was previously married to Deborah Byrd, from whom he was divorced Sept. 24, 1865.

Francis Marion "Cone" Livesay married Nora Setser. They had Tipton Livesay who
was born February 3, 1901 and died in 1991. He married Laura Ethel Lovin born
July 6, 1909 and died February 11, 1978. They were married on August 3,
1924.They had eleven children and then adopted one. The children are: Thelma
Josephine, Dorothy Lois, Kelly, Lyda Mae, Betty Jo, Dale "Pete", Mildred,Billy
Opal (female), Donald Rae, Carolyn Fay, Allen Wayne, and they adopted Rena Kay.

(3)Kelly was born February 6, 1930 in Grainger County, TN. He married Barbara
Dalton. Kelly died in 1962. They have three children, Dave, Mike, Chris.

They have three children Jeff, Larry, and Brian.

He then moved to New Tazewell and started his own newspaper The New Tazewell Times
From there moved to Knoxville, Tennessee. He was in the same business, with his sons until his death.

Edith was a charter member of the Livesay Patriotic and Historical Society, and has served in
many offices including Secretary-Treasuer and editor of the bulletin. She is retired from Valley
Fidelity Bank loan department, where she was employed for many years. I remember visiting my
Aunt Edith as a child before my Greatgrandmother died. They lived on 5th and Gill and the
house is standing today.
There were no children. They were divorced February 3, 1925.
This is the same Thomas Edward Stone that is the son of T. W. Stone and was a half-brother to
my Grandmother Birdie Stone, who was believed to be adopted by T. W. Stone. This has not
been proven by adoption records. This comes from the Family Bible Record of T. W. Stone that
I have.
Tom Ed married two more times, once to a lady in Texas and then to Hazel Richie from
Tazewell.

My grandmother frist married Dan Yoakum.
My mother, after reading the Reflections, told me that my Grandmother Payne had gone to
Mossy Creek Baptist Academy as a young woman.
She also married on Nov 10, 1901 in New Tazewell, Claiborne Co., Tennessee, USA, Lafayette
Greene PAYNE, son of Anderson G. PAYNE and Elizabeth DAY, who was born Jun 16, 1876 in
Springdale, Claiborne Co., Tennessee. Lafayette Greene died in 1924 and was buried in 1924 in
Lone Mountain, Claiborne Co., Tennessee. Lafayette Greene was married to Daisy B.
YOAKUM.
This is my Grandfather who died in 1924 I will write the recollections of John Howard Payne in
the Claiborne Progress. In 1903, Anderson turned the hack and merchandise business over to
two of his sons, Fate and Bob and the Payne Brothers Company was born. In 1912, the Paynes
began selling Fords as a sub-dealer for Burkhalt Ford of Cumberland Gap. In 1915, Ford
franchise was aquired from Burkhalt. The cars were shipped to Lone Mountain and had to be
assembled after they arrived. The Payne Brothers operation continued in Lone Mountain until
1941 when it was moved to New Tazewell. A branch office had been established in New
Tazewell in 1920. In 1929, the present Payne Motor building was built. Henry Ford was also
present and while he was in the area, he gave a check for $17,500 to L.M.U. to purchase land.
He also gave a Ford Tractor to the agriculture class at Claiborne County High School. The three
businesses, Payne Motor Company, Payne Brothers and Payne Ford Tractors were established in
1958. All have closed now except for Payne Ford Tractor operated by Owen Payne, son of Paul
Payne and Grandson of Robert W. Payne.

I am researching the Livesay/Anderson Families of Hancock County, TN
looking for the parents of my gg grandmother Edna Elizabeth Livesay b.
07 Jun 1825 d. 04 Jul 1892 in Hancock County. She was married to
Morgan Anderson and went by the name Elizabeth. On the 1840 Hancock
County census they are shown on the same page as Peter Livesay however
I have been unable to place her in this family or any of the other
Livesay families in the area. I would be very grateful for any help
or even suggestions you might give to me.
Also noticed that you have (8900) Newton Livesay on your web site. I
have further information on his wife and children. His wife was the
daughter of Morgan Anderson and Edna Elizabeth Livesay:

Hawkins Co. with the fmily. Enoch and Polly Wilbourne had seven boys and one girl according
to the 1840 census.
He also married Mary Polly WILBOURN who was born about 1805 in Grayson Co., Virginia,
USA. Mary Polly died in 1842.

about 1770 in Hanover Co., Va. Peter died in 1828 in Franklin Co., Va.
Peter was one of 3 children of Thomas Livesay who remained in Franklin Co., Va. All of his
children except George Washington Livesay who moved to Hanover C. Va remained in Franklin
and Floyd Counties.
The May, 1787 session of the Franklin Co. Court reports the following: "On motion of Peter
Livesay, Bobbin, a Negro man slave, is exempted from the payment of county levies for the
future." Peter is found in the records of Bedford, Henry, Franklin and Pittsylvania Counties
as early as 1784 and as late as 1843. The latter transactions lists the heirs of Peter Livesay,
deceased. He purchased sizeable portions of the land left to his brothers and sisters by their
father, Thomas Livesay, and his will indicates that he accumulated an estate of more than modes
proportions. His descendants still live in SW Virginia, particularly in Floyd Co.
