Payne, Hiram England Sr., barely escaped getting killed also. Hiram E. Paynes 1st wife died in MO, he cam back to his farm in Scott Co. & married December 2, 1863 to Kisirie Bloomer, d/o Nehemiah Bloomer & Mary Bledsoe. She gave birth in January 1866 to Hiram P. Payne. According to Eula Mae Lyon McNutt after Hiram E. Payne died and his son, Anderson needed some money and wanted to sell his part so there had to be some surveying done to determine what was A. Y. Clinks and Mary Polly Payne Clicks

and what was Hiram E's lands. This surveying business & Court Case is on file in Scott Co. Va. Of course it once all belonged to Old Enoch Payne.

His father (Hiram E. Payne) was killed in Scott Co., VA, August 1865, by horse theives, bushwhackers. Anderson was shot in knee and crippled for life, and Hiram England, Sr.   Hiram England, a first cousin to Hiram E. Payne was at Payne's home August 1865 when Payne's horses were stolen and being driven through the woods up the Clinch River Knobbs southwards towards the Clinch River and the Virginia and Tennessee State line. The two Hiram's and Paynes teenage son Anderson G. Payne tried to overtake and recover the horse when Hiram E. Payne was killed and Anderson G. shot in the knee and crippled for life.   Hiram England ran for his life and obtained help of the neighbors and kinsmen and retrieved the body and the wounded son. The horse thieves made their escape in the woods and was never seen again.

About 3 miles or less west of where this murder happened in Hancock Co., where Hiram England barely escaped getting killed, on the south side of Clinch River Knobbs on the farm of James Kilgore, who had purchased 120 acres and was clearing a new ground of some large brush,   Rebel bushwhackers attached him and William Lyon. Tom Edison and his gurellas attached them. As William and Hiram England tried to escape norhtward up the Knobbs, William was shot in the back and killed. Hiram England managed to crawl under one of Kilgores huge brush piles. The rebels walked all over the brush raming muskets with bayonets on the end barely missing Hiram England. He was so afraid he said he was afraid they would hear his heart thumping and be found. All this happend on October 20, 1864. The rebels stripped the body of William Lyon and left. Hiram England finally went on across into Dry Valley to Isom Edens home, whose son David Edens had married William Lyon's sister Lucille Ellen Lyon. The ladies went to pick up William's body and he is buried there in the Old Cemetery with his 3 children. As the ladies were gathering the body of William Lyon one accidently stepped on his musket, which had slipped under the brush. They gave it to William's father, Michael Mason Lyon. Then Andrew Lyon received it after his death, then to Chris Lyon, Eula Mae Lyon McNutt's father and upon his death Eula's brother Elbert Lyon got it. As Elbert needed money to install water, being crippled badly with limited income Eula Mae gave him the $400 he needed to get his water installed and now she owns the old musket. (Eula died in 1999 and know who has that musket??)

Hiram E. Paynes 1st wife died in MO, he came back to his farm in Scott Co. & married December 2, 1863 to Kisirie Bloomer, d/o Nehemiah Bloomer & Mary Bledsoe. She gave birth in January 1866 to Hiram P. Payne. She later married (Hiram E. killed in August 1865) Martin L. Gilliam and had 3 boys and a daughter by Gilliam and he diied in Scott Co., VA.
James Payne, another son of Hiram E., was in Claiborne Co., TN in 1870 with A. G. Payne.  He married in Scott Co, VA, 1872, to Sarah Roller, d/o, George W. Roller & Leliah Powers, in 1900. Sarah Roller Payne's two daughters Rosa & Lizzie Payne of Claiborne Co., TN sold their share of deceased mother, in her deceased fathers George Rollers lands, in Scott Co., VA to Epson G. Anderson. He was a brother to Mary Anderson Payne that married Hiram E. Payne. This land was near Fairview, VA.

12-141 22 Apr 1857, Hiram E. & Mary Payne sells to William Church 3 hundred acres, north side Clinch River near Sinking Spring & Run with River by Claibourn Neeleys. (Sold this, part of their father , Enoch Payne's land then went to Mo. where Mary died.  Hiram came back to another tract of land his father gave him and got killed.)
